National Train Strike on December 16

The union La Fraternidad has confirmed a total train strike for Wednesday, December 18, which will last for 24 hours across the entire country. The strike action will begin at 00:00 hours and end at 23:59 on the same day.

Reason for the strike

The main reason for the strike is the demand for salary improvements. La Fraternidad rejected the government's proposal, which offered a 1% increase for November and a 2.5% increase for December. The union considers this offer "laughable" and a "handout". Omar Maturano, the union's general secretary, harshly criticized the salary proposal, stating that "with that you can't even buy a cookie". The union also pointed out that the salary of locomotive drivers "has deteriorated by approximately 46 percent" in the last year.

Impact of the strike

The measure will affect all train lines in the country, including the six most used lines in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA):
  • Roca
  • Mitre
  • San Martín
  • Urquiza
  • Belgrano Sur
  • Sarmiento

Union's position

La Fraternidad argues that the strike is "the only legal tool we workers have when our demands are not met". The union also accused the government of "violating democratic principles" and attempting to "demonize strike actions".In a statement, the union expressed: "The Government proposes a 1% salary increase, which is equivalent to 2 lollipops a day, a mockery of railway workers that demonstrates how the ruling party despises workers".While acknowledging the negative impact on users, La Fraternidad maintains that this action is necessary to defend the rights of railway workers and maintain the purchasing power of their salaries.

Salaries have been increasing to make up for inflation. If you look at salary levels they have jumped up across the board.
Salaries have to go up because of all the cost increases. Even if salaries go up they are not matching inflation. I could live much better making half of my income before. Same for many people. They might be earning more but costs are much higher. Look at prepagas and they are still going up tremendously!

1% a month is a disgrace! How can they expect people to afford to pay for all of these cost increases during Milei's term!

Don't blame them for striking. That increase is extremely low. I thought salaries were jumping up but I guess maybe that is only the private sector.
the government needs to privatize all of these railways urgently.

But who would buy these money losing railways? Is there any money that can be made?? Doesn't sound like it.

That is what I don't figure out. If they can't ever run profitable why would anyone want to buy them? Labor laws also sound terrible there. And people jumping turnstiles is rampant. Seems like no enforcement either. Does not sound like anyone would want to deal with this.

Argentina has ordered mandatory conciliation talks in the conflict between the Automotive Transit Union (UTA) and transport companies, thereby preventing the bus strike that was scheduled for Thursday. This measure was taken by the Labor Secretariat, under the Ministry of Human Capital, with the aim of stopping the strike action announced by the union.

Yesterday we heard from the union for train workers about a strike. Unless the government increases wages to match true inflation we should continue to see strikes and disruptions.

A 15-day period of mandatory conciliation was set.During this period, both business chambers and the union are prohibited from taking forceful measures. The first conciliation hearing is scheduled for Thursday, December 26.

Strike suspension: As a result of this decision, the bus strike that would have affected most of the lines circulating in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) will not take place. Bus services in the provinces will operate normally during this period.Ongoing negotiations: The conflict originated from salary demands, and now the parties will have the opportunity to negotiate within the framework of mandatory conciliation. What you will see is on December 26, the government will have to give in to the demands for higher salaries. You will see the government give in to this issue with higher salaries.

There is no money to be made from trains in Argentina. It all operates at a loss. Daily I see people jumping turnstiles and not paying. They have no choice as they can't afford to pay it. This is what happens when you have the policies of Milei.

I posted before how unions will keep demanding more and more money to match true inflation. Another strike planned that will probably get averted due to some settlement and increase of the original offer.

La Fraternidad, the union representing locomotive drivers, has announced a new train strike for Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The industrial action will take place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, affecting all rail services throughout the country.

The strike is due to the failure of salary negotiations between the union and the authorities of Ferrocarriles Argentinos Sociedad del Estado (FASE). La Fraternidad demands:

A salary increase equivalent to 10% of workers' wages, which represents about $150,000 on average.

Compensation for the inflationary lag that, according to the union, has been accumulating since September 2024.

The union rejected the government's proposal, which consisted of increases of 1% in November and 2.5% in December, considering it insufficient.

Affected lines

The strike will affect all railway lines in the country, including:
Mitre Line
Sarmiento Line
San Martín Line
Urquiza Line
Roca Line
Belgrano Norte Line
Belgrano Sur Line
Tren de la Costa
Long-distance and freight services

Milei has been masterful how he holds out and then gives in at the end. It is remarkable how few strikes there has been. My guess is the government will probably come at double what they offered.

This same union carried out a train strike today, originally scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, to the surprise of early morning commuters, the strike began much earlier, and by 6:30 a.m., the trains were no longer running. How long will they keep up this pressure?

I just read that instead of easing tensions, the leader of this union announced another train strike for March 1. From what I understand, it's one of the highest-paid and most conflictive unions.
