President Milei on Lex Friedman's Podcast

Agreed I thought it was excellent, thanks for posting

What happens if Argentina gets too expensive? What are alternative cities/countries to move to when it's overpriced in Argentina?

This is where the average consumer can never reconcile their everyday lives vs. what their government claims. We've had the same experience here in the US, obviously more muted but I don't know anybody rich or poor whose budget was in sync with the Fed's inflation claims. For my family it's...

What happens if Argentina gets too expensive? What are alternative cities/countries to move to when it's overpriced in Argentina?

Interesting. Against all G7 currencies the dollar is actually up a lot the past few weeks. Shows you how strong the Peso has been, despite almost every prediction to the contrary.

Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

Indeed. That statistic about dissatisfaction with the economy is a perfect example of why so many people distrust the old media outlets - they had all that information for weeks or even months, but buried it until it became clear that Harris had been trounced and they needed someone to blame...

Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

I could not agree more Mike. President Biden unfortunately made one bad hire after another, which led to a lot of poor legislative and regulatory decisions and in turn drove a lot of the inflation we've all experienced. Harris' actions and statements told voters that little was going to...

Politics Argentinians no longer want to leave the country

Heard the same thing from a few families I met on the flight, they had moved to Miami in 2022 (one of them had 4 young kids in school) but said they would consider going back now.

Economy What will the cost of living increases be for August 2024 (Utilities, transportation, rent, etc) ?

Quite possibly, most of our meals were at steak/Italian places in Palermo and Recoleta (largely recommendations here which were excellent) so I couldn't say what it's like elsewhere. I just notice the blue dollar has fallen since our visit so that would account for some US$ price inflation but...

Economy What will the cost of living increases be for August 2024 (Utilities, transportation, rent, etc) ?

I was really surprised after visiting Newport earlier this year, we went past an open house that was 3-4 blocks from the beach but a tiny lot and an old, depressing rental structure. Listed at $3.1M.

Economy What will the cost of living increases be for August 2024 (Utilities, transportation, rent, etc) ?

Home insurance, car insurance, health insurance.... they've all gone up a ton the past year. Our health insurance premium rose 18% but apples to apples it was closer to 25% as deductibles and coverage limits rose, covered procedures dropped, etc (like insurance's version of shrink-flation).

Economy What will the cost of living increases be for August 2024 (Utilities, transportation, rent, etc) ?

Boy you are right about that, Ubers were easier to get than any other city I've visited. Coffee was definitely close to par with the US, but I can't remember eating at a restaurant that wasn't cheap. We didn't try any burger joints but every steak place was maybe a third of US prices when you...

Economy What will the cost of living increases be for August 2024 (Utilities, transportation, rent, etc) ?

Interesting, I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I was there just a couple of months ago and found everything to be super cheap. People told us it had gone up a lot from two years ago, but still everything we did in BA cost maybe a third of what it would in the US. Ubers were so cheap...

59 State firms in Argentina targeted for Privatization by Milei

It was the most successful probably anywhere, but Canadian Pacific was a good one too and there are numerous other examples worldwide. If you're looking at privatizations purely from a citizen's perspective, you just want the subsidies/red ink to end and service to improve, which is the low...

59 State firms in Argentina targeted for Privatization by Milei

Indeed I am! I've heard similar things, mostly because the PM has done such a poor job. We've been here before though, and the bond market is always lurking about. When you owe that much money and need more every year, it really matters what the world thinks about your creditworthiness.

59 State firms in Argentina targeted for Privatization by Milei

Different situation for sure, but Canada also had a Liberal government at the time, not like Milei who basically has a mandate to slash and burn everywhere. What we did have back then was bond markets forcing governments everywhere to tighten ship. Clinton actually ran budget surpluses by...

59 State firms in Argentina targeted for Privatization by Milei

Good for you Betsy, wish I had done the same. I didn't see the potential of CN Rail until it was far too late, I was also too anchored to the past and all of CN's debacles over the years. It was just an awful company but less than 30 years later it's a powerhouse.

59 State firms in Argentina targeted for Privatization by Milei

This is where the devil is in the details, and execution is paramount. If there's an IPO the stock will probably do well regardless because it will be coming from such a low base, but turning it into a successful company and watching the stock rise 10x, 20x or 50x will depend on who's running...

59 State firms in Argentina targeted for Privatization by Milei

It's not as difficult as you might think, there's a lot of precedent around the world. The best that comes to mind is CN Rail in Canada, which was a bloated government pig that cost taxpayers an obscene amount of money every year with no end in sight to the losses. They took it public in 1995...

Banking What is going on with the Blue dollar? Why is it going down?

Ah yes. Of all the things we consumed in Argentina, coffee was the closest to US prices. I noticed it each morning but never thought to ask why. Sure did taste good though.
