Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

No doubt Wally. I suspect the one downside for Milei longer term is that his stature outside Argentina took a hit. Before this he was viewed as a hero crusader rooting out bureaucracy and corruption, now he's one of them.

Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

Interesting, I figured as much but it's good to hear from someone local. These things always seem so big in the moment and then a year later it's a distant memory. The Sackler family (Oxycontin) was said to be responsible for more American deaths than all wars combined, and amassed a fortune...

Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

I think you're comparing apples and elephants

Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

Anything's possible but I doubt it. Most leaders face calls to resign at some point, not just Presidents but leaders of companies, sports leagues, unions, you name it. If Milei can't survive this then he's a lot weaker than I thought. I don't have all the facts here but on the surface it...

A coffee for $3.50: Argentina is the most expensive country in Latin America

That is wild, because 30 or so years ago London food was expensive, pretty limited in range and not very good. Most people described it as "terrible" actually but they were probably comparing to other European cities.

Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

I'm not sure that's news, Trump's been pretty emphatic about "USA first" for some time. He views Milei and Argentina as an ally though, which can't hurt.

Argentina and the IMF: Can This Marriage Be Saved?

We'll have to agree to disagree, Larry. The IMF is a "lender of last resort" i.e. the last place in the world you can get access to capital on reasonable terms, and Argentina is by far its biggest borrower. Nobody else comes close. Think about the hundreds of poor desperate countries around...

Argentina and the IMF: Can This Marriage Be Saved?

With all due respect, I think you're being too hard on them. Argentina has been digging a giant economic hole for decades. The government has had little or no access to outside capital markets for a long time now after burning companies and investors so many times. They are finally making...

Everything got more expensive all over the world beyond inflation rates

No doubt you're right Futuro, but there are other considerations and I hope you're lucky enough to have kids someday. Mine have been a joy and whatever privileges we've afforded them, they have paid it all back through hard work and perseverance. Most of their friends are that way too.

Everything got more expensive all over the world beyond inflation rates

We've done public and private Betsy. I can understand the tuition increases because their costs are mainly people, who are themselves experiencing a lot of inflation. US college costs have gotten out of hand.

Everything got more expensive all over the world beyond inflation rates

I'm kind of in that camp as well. Incompetence and delusion are a bad combination and I would have voted for a chimpanzee over Harris (hopefully that's not what I did haha). Not sure how to measure inflation across the whole economy here but food here has been well over 10% the past few years...

Everything got more expensive all over the world beyond inflation rates

Indeed. US CPI was sub-2% for decades until the past few years when it's been in the 4-8% range, but I don't know anyone rich or poor who can relate to those numbers. The Biden administration was a total disaster on that front. It was awful watching them stumble from one bad decision to...

Inflation Is Falling, But Argentines 'Are Not Yet Better Off': Milei's Gamble Under Fire

That's awesome Mike, I'll PM you about Italy.

Inflation Is Falling, But Argentines 'Are Not Yet Better Off': Milei's Gamble Under Fire

Interesting, do you know where in Europe? We're looking at Italy this summer and it's really expensive. I'm told restaurants are cheap outside the more touristy areas but flights are 30-50% more and accommodations 2-3x more. I'm glad to hear that Uber prices in BA have doubled. They were...

Inflation Is Falling, But Argentines 'Are Not Yet Better Off': Milei's Gamble Under Fire

I think Trump is likely posturing, I'm quite certain the US would like to take advantage of China's weakness and reduce their influence in LatAm. Unfortunately the Biden administration put $15 trillion of debt onto the US balance sheet in just 4 years, and the bond market is making noises...

Inflation Is Falling, But Argentines 'Are Not Yet Better Off': Milei's Gamble Under Fire

Think I said this before, but it is unfortunately the way of things. In these sorts of turnarounds where deep austerity programs are the first order of business, it hits low income people the hardest while those with assets benefit from buying cheap stocks and property and watching them rise...

Argentina is considering the possibility of leaving the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Agreement.

And against woke-ism. These global institutions got so consumed with instituting ESG and DEI policies, while there's so much suffering among the people they're supposed to be helping. They needed a serious kick in the pants to get refocused on their core missions, which is funded by taxpayers...
