Among its many benefits, sustainable architecture can become a great ally against the impact that the high rise in gas and electricity rates has had on all Argentine homes. This is because homes built in this way reduce the carbon footprint and are energy efficient, which provides considerable energy savings.

The good news is that, according to data from the Argentine Chamber of Construction (CAC), 72% of real estate projects in the country in recent years are incorporating sustainable construction elements in their designs and executions.

In this context, the fundamental principles of bioclimatic architecture are that they take advantage of natural resources such as the sun, wind, vegetation and ambient temperature to create comfortable conditions that reduce the need to use mechanical heating or air conditioning systems. In Argentina, for example, windows are oriented towards the north to maximize the capture of solar heat and minimize exposure to storms and cold from the south.

Another key point is how the building is covered - this includes the façade, walls, windows, floor and roof. Depending on its design, heat gains or losses can be obtained that are beneficial for the occupants of the house, as well as the existence of cross ventilation to generate air movement in summer.

New protective tools

The new sustainable construction models combine resistance, sustainability and high energy efficiency . They also achieve 40% acoustic insulation, avoiding any annoying noise from outside.

Some of the tools that today manage to generate efficient energy and consumption savings are:

  • Buildings that have rainwater collection tanks for cleaning sidewalks and parking lots.
  • The installation of solar panels, taking into account that these renewable energy sources have a long-lasting performance, retaining more than 70% of their power after decades of use.
  • Efficient aluminium and PVC windows, which stand out for their degree of airtightness due to their thermal and acoustic insulation, their resistance and minimal maintenance, which helps to optimise the energy consumed in the home.
  • The implementation of geothermal energy, which uses radiant and cooling floors together with systems that take advantage of the ground temperature through coolant tubes, reduces electricity consumption to a minimum.
  • Home automation turns homes into smart spaces through automation. With IoT sensors and simple networks, lighting, blinds and temperature can be controlled from a cell phone. Motion sensors optimize energy savings by adjusting functions based on presence in the room.
  • Insulating walls and ceilings from the outside, together with the use of double-glazed windows, significantly improves the energy efficiency of homes. These techniques reduce heat and cold losses, helping to maintain a stable interior temperature and optimize energy consumption.

All these resources available in sustainable architecture not only help protect the environment, a practice increasingly demanded by builders, but also allow for significant savings in utilities. This contributes to the economy of households by reducing energy and maintenance costs.
