A family of four needed an income of $939,887 in August to stay below the poverty line, the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec) reported on Wednesday. The monthly variation of that threshold accelerated to 4.4% per month and was above the variation of inflation , due to the impact of increases in public service rates. That same household required $421,474 to cover its basic food needs and not be in a situation of indigence.
The Total Basic Basket (CBT) is reported by the agency to contain the goods and services necessary to avoid being poor in Greater Buenos Aires. For a household made up of a 35-year-old woman, her 18-year-old son and her 61-year-old mother, the CBT last month amounted to 748,259 pesos. For another household made up of four people, a 35-year-old man, a 31-year-old woman, a 6-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter, it amounted to 939,887 pesos. For another household of five people, made up of a man and a woman, both 30 years old, and three children aged 5, 3 and 1, it amounted to 988,554 pesos.
The Indec Basic Food Basket (CBA) contains the food necessary to cover basic food needs. In August, it recorded an increase of 3.9%, below inflation. The accumulated increase in 2024 was 75.1% and 222.7% in the last year. The needs for an adult “equivalent” to that basket amounted to 136,399 pesos.
The CBA For a household made up of a 35-year-old woman, her 18-year-old son and her 61-year-old mother, the amount last month was 335,542 pesos. For another household made up of four people, a 35-year-old man, a 31-year-old woman, a 6-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter, the amount was 421,474 pesos. For another household of five, made up of a man and a woman, both 30 years old, and three children aged 5, 3 and 1, the amount was 443,298 pesos.
INDEC published today the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August , which registered a monthly increase of 4.2%, in line with estimates by private consulting firms and market analysts, who projected inflation of around 4 percent . With this data, the interannual inflation stood at 236.7%, thus consolidating a deceleration trend.
The food and beverage sector grew by 3.6% in August and continues to be one of the main drivers of inflation. Various private estimates had recorded significant increases in mass consumption products. This reflects not only internal pressure due to production costs, but also the impact of external factors such as the price of raw materials and weather conditions that affect crops.
The INDEC report also showed increases in other important areas such as housing and services, which registered a rise of 7%, driven by increases in rents and public services.
“The division with the highest increase in the month was Housing, water, electricity and other fuels (7.0%) due to increases in Housing rent and related expenses, Water supply and Electricity, gas and other fuels. This was followed by Education (6.6%) due to the rise in the different levels and types of education; and Transportation (5.1%) due to increases in public transportation,” stated the Indec report.
Although the Government continues to bet on a slowdown in inflation for the rest of the year, the most conservative projections, both from the Central Bank and from private economists, indicate that monthly inflation could remain around 3.5% to 4% in the coming months. This leaves little room for an abrupt drop in prices, although the authorities are confident that the annual CPI will close 2024 with a variation close to 130%, as anticipated in the preliminary Budget project that will be sent to Congress.
