After warning unions that they are willing to cede Aerolíneas Argentina operations to a private company, Milei's top officials discussed options to avoid strikes with authorities from the Brazilian company.

After announcing that he is willing to give up control of Aerolíneas Argentinas operations if the strikes by the aeronautical unions continue, this afternoon the Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos , and the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, received representatives of the Brazilian company Gol at the Casa Rosada. This is a sign that they have started formal conversations and are willing to carry out the plan to reduce the union conflict that until now had been raised only as a warning.

The Government tried to keep the meeting with Gol's director of institutional relations, Alberto Fajerman, secret at first, but then released a photo with a new criticism of the unions. The meeting took place in the early afternoon, in the Hall of the Coats of Arms of the Interior, and was attended, in addition to the ministers, by the Secretary of Transport, Franco Mogetta, one of the protagonists in the conflict with the unions; and the Deputy Chief of Staff, José Rolandi, a technical profile . "Options are being evaluated," they said briefly at Balcarce 50.

Gol started out as a low-cost airline, expanded its operations and is now the largest airline in Brazil. Together with Colombia's Avianca, it is part of the Abra Group, which had been mentioned as a possible buyer of part of AA when its privatization was being discussed, in the early stages of the debate on the Bases law.

Initially, Milei did not join the conversation, even though -unusually for a Friday- he has been at the Casa Rosada since the morning (he only had a meeting with the president of the Chamber of Deputies of Israel on his agenda). But through his officials, the head of State had proposed in recent days a unilateral solution to the conflict with Aerolíneas Argentinas, where pilots and other aeronautical unions are putting pressure with strikes for a salary increase.

According to various sources, including a photo with angry faces, they would seek to have another Latin American airline take over the operations of the flag carrier, initially for domestic flights. But until today they had not given details about conversations with specific companies. “The Government puts limits on Mr. Biró and his union of pilots, who from their privileged positions never tire of harming Argentines. In this context, we met with GOL Airlines, as we will do with Jet Smart and we already did with Flybondi,” said two hours after the meeting, from the Headquarters. They were referring, once again, to Pablo Biró, general secretary of the Association of Airline Pilots (Apla), promoter of the forceful measures to improve workers' income during the crisis.

In addition, they would support in Congress a bill promoted by the PRO deputy, who is very close to the Government, Hernán Lombardi, to carry out the privatization of AA, which had been eliminated from the initial list proposed by the ruling party in the first Ley Bases.

That plan had begun to take shape the day before yesterday, in a meeting, also at the Interior headquarters, between Francos and Caputo, together with the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei; the president of Aerolíneas, Fabián Lombardo ; the deputy chief of staff of the Interior, Lisandro Catalán ; the presidential spokesman, Manuel Adorni , and the presidential advisor, Santiago Caputo .

At that time, no concrete actions had been taken, or at least they had not been made public. “We are giving the unions time to settle the collective bargaining agreement until mid-October. You could call it pressure, we are telling them that it is not an empty threat, we are going to put it on you ,” the Government said yesterday. And today they moved forward with talks with the major players in the sector, at the Government Palace.

For now, the technical and legal details of the execution of a possible transfer of operations are being kept secret. They only let it be known that a key date is October 17, when the deadline for the State to appoint the recently resigned managers of operations and operational safety of Aerolíneas expires.

The last offer from the Government in the labour dispute was 11%, but the workers are demanding a sum close to 80%. For now, of the five unions, only two have accepted: UPSA (Union of Senior and Professional Personnel of Aerocommercial Companies) and APTA (Association of Aeronautical Technical Personnel ), which represent around 30% of the employees. The rest remain on a war footing.
