Argentina to charge foreigners for healthcare and education in the future

Breaking News in Argentina: The Government will make changes to the immigration regime: national universities and public hospitals will be able to charge fees to non-resident foreigners. This is badly needed as Argentina shouldn't be paying for these things.

There are also rumors that the immigration policy will be toughened up end permanent-tourists from staying in Argentina without getting residency. That is a longer term project.

I read another article today. What surprised me is that 23% of medical students are foreigners!

Yes it is true. Many of my colleagues in Brazil send their kids to study in Argentina free. It is expensive in countries like Brazil or Colombia to send their kids to top Universities in their home countries. Why pay if you can send them to Argentina free. It made no sense especially because these people do not typically stay in Argentina after they are done. They go back home.

National universities should only be free for its citizens NOT foreigners. This is a positive change.

It is not fair to say that all of these medical students studying here leave Argentina. There are many that end up staying in Argentina and staying in the healthcare field. Of course the past few years when salaries were so miserable many left to make more money in other countries.

I do agree that Argentina shouldn't be subsidizing the education of people that aren't from Argentina.

But isn't this the entire point of the Mercosur? Will Argentina need to leave Mercosur in order to do this?

I mean... If they're going to charge those on student visas... At least for the Brazilians, they can go straight to Migraciones and ask for permanent residency, and as soon as they get the resuelto from Migraciones, they've got the same rights as any Argentine except the right to vote.

I don't think they can really do anything about this unless they change something with Mercosur which I am not sure they will because Milei just accepted to be President of Mercosur for the next 6 months.

I don't know if all of the Mecosur countries have it so easy like Brazillians do @Darksider415. But my Brazilian friends do exactly as you mentioned, They just apply for permanent residency shortly after they arrive. But I don't think it is the same for other countries. I may be wrong.

Correct. It is easier for Brazilians vs. other Mercosur. I don't believe it would be too easy to just start for university education for Mercosur members but then again with Milei he is getting things accomplished I never thought he could.
