Unfortunately, this isn't new. For a while now, I've heard the advice that if you're in more isolated areas at night, you should avoid coming to a complete stop at stop signs or traffic lights when possible. If there’s no oncoming traffic, it’s better to go through the red light instead of waiting for the green. That's what I do.
