Caminito in the most famous and colorful street in the City of Buenos Aires. It is also the most visited by foreign tourists.

The Caminito Street is located in the heart of the La Bca neighborhood, in the area known as "Vuelta de Rocha", in front of the shore of the Riachuelo. Caminito is located 400 meters from “La Bombonera”, the stadium of Club Atlético Boca Juniors.

History of Caminito Street

In the area where Caminito is currently located, in 1898 the train passed. In 1928, that railroad closed and the land was abandoned. In 1950, a group of neighbors, including the renowned painter Quinquela Martín, decided to clean and recover the space for a public walk. Thus begins the opening of the street, which they named Caminito, in homage to the tango of Gabino Coria Peñaloza and Juan de Dios Filiberto.

The walk was decorated with sculptures and murals by different artists. In 1959 Caminito was transformed into an open-air museum, where many painters from the neighborhood exhibited their works.

Los Conventillos (Typical houses)

In the area of Caminito there are some very unique homes, known as “Conventillos”. These houses were the typical homes of the Italian immigrants who settled in the neighborhood. The houses are collective homes, where many families live sharing patios, kitchens, etc.

Living conditions are not very good inside the tenements. The material used for the construction of the houses was zinc sheets, which were painted with leftover paint from nearby workshops. Today the tradition of painting houses with different colors remains. Many tenements today are used as a place
