Newcomer Experience in Chinese Supermarkets

Is this common in Chinese supermarkets? Removing expiration dates from products? I've talked to some locals, and they also told me that if I need to buy fresh items that require refrigeration, I shouldn't go to a Chinese supermarket. Rumor has it that they unplug the refrigerators at night to save energy. They suggested it's better to go to Coto, Jumbo, Dia, or Carrefour instead.

What is your experience?

I seriously doubt that they unplug the refrigerator at night. But don't doubt they are selling expired products. Like Wally mentioned, I also have seen expired things at the supermarket. It is always recommended to check expiration dates on everything you buy.

tiendas chinas suck. i always go to Libertad, Coto, Cencosud, or Carrefour. at least there's a little bit more quality control, and i get treated better than most of the Chinese store employees

Agree. The times I go to the Chinese stores is sometimes for spices or things I can't easily find in some of the bigger markets. But I like to stick to the bigger supermarkets too. But I agree with you all to check the expiration dates. Many times they sell stuff that might be expired. That happened to me a few times.
