At the end of a week marked by important demonstrations in the vicinity of the National Congress and the subsequent action of the Police in the operations led by Minister Patricia Bullrich, the Government announced this Friday the purchase of new equipment for the security forces.

The acquisitions were announced by presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni during his usual press conference, where he explained that most of the equipment used by the staff was out of date and gave details about which items they will have from now on.

"The Ministry of Security acquired 19,700 vests and 10,800 Bersa 9 mm pistols to reinforce the excellent work of the security forces," the spokesman said, highlighting the actions of the officers.

Along these lines, he stressed that, until Javier Milei took office at the end of last year, members of the security forces used and protected themselves with materials that had already fulfilled and exceeded their useful life : “Until December 10, 2023, police officers used expired vests and more than 14 thousand pistols were more than 40 years old ,” he said. He added: “The difference between chaos and civilization lies in the professionalism of law enforcement.”

Manuel Adorni also referred to one of the events that occurred last Wednesday during the march for the Retirement Mobility Law, where security forces used pepper spray to dissuade a group of protesters and ended up hitting a 10-year-old girl. In this context, the spokesman defended the operation mounted by Patricia Bullrich and blamed the minor's parents for what happened.

“We are saddened that a 10-year-old girl, due to the irresponsibility of her mother, participated in an event with a focus on violence. The act of irresponsibility was total and that does not mean that the operation was not successful. At that moment, it is clear that they want to enter Congress. We appeal to children not to be in those places and not to be used. The girl was made to testify on television, children should be left out of these adult issues,” he said.

However, the spokesman described the incident with the girl as “unfortunate” but reiterated that, in this case, it was proven that no one had deviated from protocol. For this reason, he announced that no action will be taken in the matter.

On the absence of legislators at the presentation of the Budget

During the press conference, Adorni also referred to the presentation of the Budget that Javier Milei will make this Sunday in Congress and the announced absence of several legislators from the presentation.

“Everyone is free to do what they think is best, everyone is invited. The President will speak to the people and explain what we intend with the new budget scheme and how beneficial it will be for everyone. If they decide not to attend, they will have some reason for doing so, but the President will speak to the 47 million Argentines,” he said.

He then spoke about the removal of official Rodrigo Valdés from negotiations with the International Monetary Fund. “We understand that it was a decision that went in the right direction. It is an issue of the IMF with which we have a good relationship, we are strictly complying with our entire fiscal and monetary program. Our relationship with the IMF is impeccable,” he said.

Valdés had long been acting as the number one in the negotiations between the International Monetary Fund and Argentina. The Chilean economist took up his post when Sergio Massa was the Minister of Economy and was in charge of the last technical reviews during the Frente de Todos administration , in which the deficit and reserve targets were not met. However, in recent days, he was accused by Milei of having “bad intentions” and was removed.
