Expat Life: Local Discoveries, Global Connections

Have you ever seen an Expat go completely insane?

Monday near the Once subway station, a white guy about 50 years old, grey hair, with perfect English and what I would describe as a California tech bro accent blocking the intersection of Rivadavia and Pueyyredon while screaming the 'N' word and ranting about every "Jews control the world" conspiracy you have ever heard in English. He had a decent crowd of Argentinos watching him and laughing along although they didn't understand a word he was saying.

So many thousands of expats moved here in recent years because it's so cheap. Now prices keep doubling while the dollar drop. Imagine those who sold everything in the USA, cut all ties and burned the boats, Now suddenly they find themselves trapped here without being able to afford anything. Maybe they had spouses who dumped them onto the street once their money ran out. They have nothing to go back to and increasingly nothing they can afford here

Yikes. I haven't seen that kind of crazy behavior, but I have heard about expats that moved here thinking it would be cheap forever and then really struggling once it gets expensive here. People always think an area will be cheap forever. I was reading online on another forum an expat here in BA that was so scrapped she was taking a shower and saving it to flush her toilet or something crazy. Water here is very cheap. How down on your finances do you have to do something like that in BA?

Is this for real??

Too much drugs...
Yes this would be my guess. Drugs or alcohol.

This is ridiculous! I've never heard of anyone in Argentina doing something like this. Difficult to believe. Water is almost free here.

I read that too about the lady that can't afford to pay her water bills. Insane. But this is someone that was on ther verge of homelessness if they stayed in the US. BA is much cheaper but it sounds like many people can't afford it here even before prices surged.

Thousands of expats have moved here? Is that true? I see a few expats but I doubt it is thousands is it? No one is trapped here. People can always leave. I met several people that were leaving here soon. No one is forced to stay here. Plenty of places in Latin America that are cheaper than BA.

Doubt it was thousands of people moving here. There were a bunch of digital nomads but many have left for cheaper places. I left BA due to increased costs and also inflation. People act like inflation has been stopped. That is not true. Prices keep going up there. Prices are stable here in Spain.

Many of my mates left BA and the few remaining left are getting ready to leave.

Can't blame a whole country for this. Yes, there are white homeless all over the world.

Yes this is an everyday occurrence in New York City, LA, Seattle and just about any other city in Buenos Aires. Actually BA barely has any mentally ill on the streets compared to the USA.
True. You can't get on the subway and not run across people screaming in most metro cities in the USA. Buenos Aires is very minor with mostly people keeping to themselves or just politely begging for money. I'm always surprised it is so few incidents here for all the economic pain.

^^^^ This.^^^^

Wally is completely correct. It is terrible in downtown areas of most metropolitan cities in the USA. I travel quite frequently and the USA definitely has to have a higher share of mentally ill and/or drug addicted homeless. Buenos Aires has homeless but it's mostly people just keeping to themselves or sleeping on a mattress sleeping. I was in New York City a few months ago and you almost can't go on the Subway system there because it is chock full of crazies, homeless and drug addicted. Many screaming or totally whacko. Not ideal if you're with young kids.

Many people if they are in Buenos Aires and they can't afford it should just leave. There are plenty of places around the world that they can move to.
