Last month, a typical family in the City of Buenos Aires needed to earn an income of at least $1,017,520 to be considered middle class and $684,115.30 to not fall below the poverty line . Meanwhile, in order not to be indigent, at least $402,752 per month was necessary, according to the data arising from the survey released by the General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses of Buenos Aires.

In this way, the Buenos Aires indicator reflects that a 35-year-old woman and man couple, both economically active, owners of the home in which they live and with two sons aged 9 and 6, needed $129,404 more in February than in January to belong to the middle social stratum.

According to the report, the expenses of the basic food basket (CBA), which mark the limit of indigence, had an increase of almost 14.88% compared to January, a figure that was above the inflation of the period that in the City, which reached 14.1% in February.

Regarding the total basic basket (CBT), whose value marks the poverty line, the monthly increase was also 14.88% last month compared to January and 310% compared to the same month in 2023. That is, both baskets rose above the general inflation for the month and the year, which was 264.5%. The annual variation indicates that in order not to be poor, in the City of Buenos Aires you need to earn $509,035 more than in February 2023.

It is worth noting that the analysis carried out by the Buenos Aires statistical agency includes an assumption according to which the typical family defined in the report is the owner of the property in which they live . This implies that your housing needs are covered. Therefore, the income necessary to reach the middle class, in the case of a family of tenants, is much higher .

The stratification in which the report of the Buenos Aires statistical entity is organized allows, as explained, to identify the most unprotected sectors of society in terms of situations of indigence and poverty and, on the other hand, to account for the heterogeneity of the non-poor sectors in order to facilitate a more comprehensive analysis of the social situation of the City, measuring the evolution over time of each of the defined strata. Namely:

* In a situation of indigence: these are households whose total monthly income is not enough to cover the basic food basket (CBA - indigence line). Last month, those who received income less than $402,752 belonged to this range.

* In a situation of non-indigent poverty: those households whose total monthly income is not enough to cover the total basic basket (CBT - poverty line) but allows them to at least acquire the CBA. In this situation are those who receive income between $402,752 and $684,115.30.

* Vulnerable non-poor: households whose total monthly income is at least the CBT and does not reach the total basket (TC) of the Consumption Basket System. It is the range of families with income between $684,115.30 and $814,016 per month.

* Fragile middle sector: households whose total monthly income is at least the CT and does not reach 1.25 times the CT of the Consumer Basket System. Income between $814,016 and $1,017,520 per month.

* Middle sector “middle class”: Households whose total monthly income is at least 1.25 times the CT and does not reach 4 times the CT of the Consumer Basket System. Income between $1,017,520 and $3,256,066.51.

* Affluent sector: households whose monthly income is 4 times or more than the TC of the Consumer Basket System. From $3,256,066.51 onwards.

Funny how all these surveys assume that people already own their home. What about all the poor that have no home and are renting. These surveys are unrealistic. Takes a hell more of $$$ to make it then all these fantasy minimums seem.

I am actually amazed with just how many own their own homes in Argentina. Every maid I have had do not have much money but they take the bus in for an hour and they have owned their own humble places. Interesting that this survey considers one affluent earning 3,256,066 on up. Look at the same statistics for the USA. This should show people on fixed retirement savings that you can still live in Argentina fairly well on limited budgets from social security vs. the USA.
