University march across the country

Thousands of people are mobilized throughout the country in defense of public education, in line with the protest that began in Congress and Plaza Houssay towards Plaza de Mayo (in CABA), demanding more budget for operating expenses and salaries of university professors.

In the city of Buenos Aires, the protest began at 2:30 p.m. from Plaza Houssay, with a first stop at the National Congress. Although there was a police cordon stationed in front of the historic building, the movement of the march occurred normally, so far without crossings between protesters and the police.

This was the mobilization in Córdoba

In Córdoba they estimate that participation reached around 70 thousand people. The column crossed a good part of the city center, from the Monument to the University Reform of 19 to the Patio Olmos. At the end of the tour, the text agreed upon by the university system made up of the National Interuniversity Council (CIN), the Trade Union Front of National Universities and the Argentine University Federation (FUA) was read.

The president of the University Federation of Córdoba (FUC), Aylén Orellana , stated that, in addition to the “budget cut in universities, there is an adjustment from which young people are not immune.” “We are going through a crisis in terms of rental prices, the basic basket. The national crisis is reflected in the student body,” she said.

From north to south of the country: this was the mobilization in defense of the public university

“The UNC is going through a critical moment as a consequence of the national government's policies . Universities must be open doing teaching, research and extension. Our universities suffer a strong adjustment in real terms in their operating expenses to maintain buildings, support cafeterias, scientific development, finance hospitals and pay for basic services. We reached March 2024 with a budget for December 2022. The 70% increase plus the recent announcement of an additional 70% constitutes an insufficient incentive,” they expressed in an official document read within the framework of the mobilization.

The dean of the Faculty of Communication at the UNC, Mariela Parisi , highlighted that it was a massive call “not only from the entire university community, but also from the citizens, from all Cordobans, defending the right to public higher education. , inclusive, free, quality.”

Among those present was also the national deputy, Rodrigo De Loredo, who expressed: “The lack of education is very expensive for a country. We must demand that the adjustment does not go through retirement benefits and the educational budget. We oppose those points. We are going to insist with this claim. Today something has to change today and if not the fight will continue. The discourse of the inefficient State does not apply to universities. There will be things to correct, but the Argentine University is one of the few codas that has international recognition in the public sphere. "There is no future or development program that is not leveraged in universities."
