How to cast your absentee ballot in the U.S. presidential election

There is some more information here. Just keep in mind procedures are different from State to State. Some States you can request a ballot by email and just email it to them and others you have to mail to them which can be difficult or expensive with postage.

Hopefully, all Americans are voting this year in the US Presidential elections. Here are instructions on how to cast your absentee vote.

Thanks for the reminder. I just read that you have to have postage even if you drop off at the US Embassy. Do they sell postage stamps there? How does one go about getting postage stamps here?

There are three ways to submit your physical ballot. You can mail it with Argentina’s state service, Correo Argentino; ship it via a private courier; or place it in the diplomatic pouch at the United States Embassy in Buenos Aires, located on Avenida Colombia 4300. The latter option is free, but keep in mind that your envelope must bear appropriate U.S. postage and can take up to four weeks to reach its final destination. This means you’ll want to drop it off no later than October 5 (or earlier, if you can).

I have dropped off my ballet via the diplomatic pouch option at the US Embassy and never was asked for any postage. I'm not sure if this is new. I can't imagine where you would find US stamps in Argentina.

this is me, and i was hoping to hear from someone who lives in a State that requires physical mail ballots. i am in Mendoza so the US Embassy is 13 hours' drive and not an option. if i print, vote, sign on A4 paper here in Mendoza, anyone have any idea how people usually vote this way? mail Correo Argentino to the USA directly, or mail to Buenos Aires Embassy to be forwarded before 01Oct?

I ran into a girl that was from the US and she told me she has to send in a DHL each year. She was in Salta. She told me the Correo Argentino was horrible and totally unreliable so she used DHL but it was expensive so beware of that.

Does your state allow voting online @StatusNomadicus? Some do.

nope, that's why i asked :p

DHL but it was expensive
expensive is right - an A4 envelope with DHL to my state is:

Estimated delivery Tue, October 1 latest by end of day (Book by 23/9/2024 by 15:00 for a pick-up today)
No VAT charge, USD 83.72

Ouch. Someone else told me they lived down in Bariloche and had to send it in and spent just under $100 USD so that sounds accurate. I probably wouldn't do it unless I was in a swing state. I live in California which always goes blue. So my vote won't change that.

So my vote won't change that.
there are Ballot Access benefits. i'd like to break the Libertarian/independent 5% record someday, and be part of a true Third-Party system in the USA. and also i vote with my conscience, and as the US Empire further erodes as the Spanish, British, and Roman empires did, i will sleep soundly at night knowing that i didn't contribute to the Uniparty's duopoly :)

That is a good point. This year unfortunately we have dumb or dumber to elect.

A cousin living in Calafate just told me that she spent over $97 USD or 126,300 pesos sending via DHL to the States. You Americans sure do take voting seriously.

@StatusNomadicus you're smart sending it via DHL. Last election I was here and send it via the Correo Argentina which is the postal system here. I even sent it express and added certified with tracking to make sure it got there. I sent it 2 months before the election and it never arrived. I spent about $35 dollars doing that. The election before that we dropped it off at the USA Embassy in Buenos Aires and it was never received.

It costs more to send via DHL but well worth it as they will get it.

Same happened to me with the mail. NEVER use the mail system here. It stinks! You can also fax your ballet in to many states as well which I heard is more dependable and much cheaper!

as always, South Park is relevant (attached GIF). highly recommend anyone who doesn't want the Uniparty to continue, to vote for a true Third-Party candidate...we can have a Milei-style Libertarian if we reject the duopoly and vote for Chase Oliver www.x.com/ChaseForLiberty

Trump and Harris blocked him from debating. he would have absolutely crushed those clowns :p

sending via DHL to the States.
i have a fix! finally heard back from the US Embassy...see my post here:

not sure what Correo Argentino will cost, but hopefully just a few bucks.

You Americans sure do take voting seriously.
can't complain about federal politics if you do nothing to at least feel like your voice matters! and it's a very low percentage according to FVAP dot gov: "OUT OF THE 2.8 MILLION OVERSEAS CITIZENS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE, 3.4% VOTED IN 2022"

thanks for this data point, @Jeep - i can track my ballot to my State online (received or not, only), so i'll be paying very close attention. i also don't know the legality, but if my ballot hasn't been received by 01Nov i'm going to have family print my signed ballot and mail it to my State recorder as a backup.

$35 USD would be crazy to send a piece of paper within the country....unless that was the price Argentina to USA, with Correo? such a shame that the Embassy failed to do their job. they say it takes 4 weeks, if you look at my twitter/X post above

absolutely, but there are a few (i can't find the exact list anymore, and neither can Grok AI) that do NOT allow email/fax ballots. i would love to be able to use eFax or email...but some States don't want to risk the fraud i guess?

No that was the price of Buenos Aires to USA but I just find the post office here horrible so avoid them now. Good info about the USA Embassy but just note that I have heard from several people who said their ballot never made it in time to their State. Not sure if there is mal intent there or not.

Thanks.

I also looked for the list but wasn't able to find it. I imagine fax would open to a tremendous amount of fraud. It will be interesting to see how much fraud is in this year's election. Many states have already found hundreds of thousands of ineligible ballots either to fraud, dead people, multiple entries, etc.

Just saw this. Don't count on the US Embassy diplomatic service. My son in law who is American used it in 2020 and although he sent it with 6 weeks prior to election and did not make it there. I heard the same from some Americans. I don't know why it takes so much time.
