The embassy of the European Union (EU) in Argentina celebrated the 74th anniversary of Europe Day in an event with notable presences from national politics and diplomacy, which took place at the charming Yacht Club in Puerto Madero. Amador Sánchez Rico , ambassador of the EU delegation in Buenos Aires, gave a speech in which he thanked the guests and called to “ strengthen ” the relations of the Old Continent with the Casa Rosada. “It is key to continue working with our most reliable partners . "Those are our friends, like Argentina , with whom we have always worked," said the diplomat.

The words of the European ambassador were followed by the attentive gazes of front-line officials of the Government of Javier Milei. Victoria Villarruel , vice president of the Nation, was the star presence. The event even began formally when the head of the Senate arrived at the Yacht Club. “Now, we will listen to the words of Ambassador Sánchez Rico.” But in addition, Patricia Bullrich , Minister of National Security, Luis Petri , Minister of Defense, and Diana Mondino , Minister of Foreign Affairs, also attended . “I have never before seen so many national ministers as today,” a diplomat invited to the commemoration confessed to Infobae .

The diplomat celebrated that the EU is the third country that invests the most in Argentina after China and Brazil. However, the European Union considers that, unlike Beijing, Buenos Aires' trade balance with the Brussels-based bloc is in surplus. “ Let's continue working to strengthen this relationship. We need each other ,” emphasized the representative of the European Union delegation.

Due to the general strike carried out by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), both Sánchez Rico and Mondino took advantage of the occasion to leave an ironic message. “The weather was nice and it was nice that there were no traffic problems,” the Argentine chancellor ironically said. “Today was something busy... or something stopped at the national level,” the European diplomat added, jokingly.

Year after year, the EU celebrates the anniversary of the day of the birth of the international society. It is a date that celebrates the Schuman Declaration , signed on May 9, 1950 at the urging of Robert Schuman, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of France. Europeans consider this document as the kickoff to move towards what is now formally the most important regional bloc on the planet.

“We are celebrating the path of prosperity that Europeans have been following for 74 years. We have become a bloc with the highest level of political freedoms, social cohesion and economic growth. And also of peace ,” expressed the EU ambassador. Although the event is held every May 9, this time it was special. Because the presence of high-level officials, national legislators, businessmen from multiple sectors, as well as ambassadors from all latitudes.

During his speech, Sánchez Rico analyzed the international panorama and considered that “ the world, in general, is worse .” Last year, the ambassador had warned about the situation in Europe due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Twelve months later, Vladimir Putin does not give up his attack on kyiv. But there was also a resounding escalation in the Middle East . The Hamas attack on Israel in Gaza, on October 7, 2023, escalated the conflict in that region, whose paroxysm took place with Iran's frustrated bombing of Tel Aviv on April 14. “ The situation on the international board has become even more complicated .” There is less multilateralism and there is much more transaction between States. The language of power has returned to relationships in the world,” said the European ambassador from Spain.

In this framework, the representative of the continental bloc celebrated relations with Argentina. Buenos Aires applies a shift in foreign policy since the landing of Milei at Balcarce 50, whose compass points to the west. The United States, Israel and the European Union are the main horizon of the geopolitics of the Libertarian Government. Sánchez Rico, who knows these movements perfectly, thanked the Argentine officials for their presence. And he especially alluded to Luis Petri .

The mention was not random. The representative of the European Union is aware of, and closely follows, the efforts that the Ministry of Defense and the Palacio San Martín are carrying out in Brussels with the aim of Argentina becoming a “ global partner ” of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ). Although Washington has a decisive weight in the defensive alliance, Europe contributes the majority of the 32 countries that make up that organization.

This is a relevant fact, given that once the accession process has begun, Argentina needs the consensus of the 32 member states to achieve the status of “global partner.” Petri began these efforts in April and Mondino deepened them during his recent tour of Europe, which included an official visit to the EU and NATO headquarters in Brussels. “ I am glad that Minister Petri is accompanying us, with whom we have been working hand in hand ,” said Sánchez Rico at one point in his opening speech for Europe Day.

At the same time, Buenos Aires advances in the process to join the OECD. It is a four to five year journey. Last week in Paris, Mondino received the Roadmap to retrace the path of accession to the “ Club of developed countries ”. There, too, the Europeans stand with multiple members. They are supports that strengthen Argentina's efforts before both international organizations.

In both processes, there is something key for Argentina. But above all for Europe's foreign policy direction. Between June 6 and 9, elections will be held to renew the European Parliament , the highest entity of the European Union. The Casa Rosada is attentively awaiting this electoral process, which may alter the international and commercial priorities of Brussels. “ It will set the course of the European Union in the coming years ,” Sánchez Rico told the guests at the EU event.

In addition to the European ambassador, Villarruel and Mondino also spoke. The vice president gave a brief speech to thank the invitation and ratify the diplomatic link with Brussels. “I hope that we deepen the ties of cooperation and friendship that we have always had with the European Union,” she said. For her part, the chancellor agreed with that line: “Always count on us to respect the values we share.”
