This is an award that LatinFinance magazine will give him at a breakfast in Washington on Wednesday. Last year the winner was Fernando Haddad, Lula da Silva's Minister of Economy.

Minister Luis Caputo will be awarded this Wednesday in Washington as “Finance Minister” of the year, a recognition given annually by the influential specialized publication LatinFinance. The recognition was celebrated on the social network X , formerly Twitter, by President Javier Milei himself .

The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday morning in the American capital and will be part of the agenda of the head of the Treasury, who is with the rest of the economic team in the United States for the annual meeting of the IMF and the World Bank.

This is an award that honors once a year a senior finance official from a particular country. In 2023, it was the Brazilian Fernando Haddad , minister of Lula da Silva, and in previous years, the Chilean Ignacio Briones and the Brazilian Paulo Guedes .

Each year, the publication usually includes the opinions of economists and consultants to justify the choice of Minister of the Year. LatinFinance has not yet made public the reasons why it chose Caputo for this recognition. As a reference, last year Haddad was awarded because “he has managed to get key economic reforms approved and has gained the credibility of the new government, and the results prove it: the economy is growing at a faster pace than expected.”

For this year, the head of the Treasury could be the chosen one for having been the minister who led the process of aggressive economic policies that Javier Milei's government put in place as soon as it took office: a strong initial devaluation, negative interest rate policies, accumulation of reserves in the first months, elimination of remunerated liabilities of the Central Bank and deceleration of inflation, even in a context of recession.

Caputo, along with Central Bank President Santiago Bausili , are in Washington to participate in the most important meeting of the year of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The agenda of the economic team in the United States will extend until next Friday and will be marked mainly by meetings with officials from the IMF and the World Bank. In addition, meetings are planned with representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Fonplata, two regional banks that lend to Argentina.

The Minister of Economy will also meet with his G20 counterparts “in a panel to discuss the international economic situation and macroeconomic prospects for next year” and will attend the meeting of the Development Committee of the World Bank and the IMF, “which aims to promote consensus among governments on issues related to development,” the Ministry of Finance said.

The head of the Treasury could be the chosen one for having been the minister who faced the process of aggressive economic policies that the government of Javier Milei put in place as soon as he took office.

Meanwhile, the minister is expected to participate in the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), "a space that advises and informs the IMF Board of Governors on the supervision and management of the international monetary and financial system."

Caputo, meanwhile, was present at the Council on Foreign Relations ( CFR ) this afternoon, a prestigious forum on international geopolitics, which Javier Milei had already attended in September. Before arriving at the CFR, Caputo and his entourage had an important meeting at the World Bank (WB). At 9 AM (Argentina time), the Minister of Economy will be received by Anna Bjerde -Managing Director of Operations-, Felipe Jaramillo -Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean-, and Marianne Fay , Director for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
