Javier Milei, with Antonio Garamendi (CEOE) and senior executives from Spanish companies.

President Javier Milei described his meeting with Spanish companies as “extraordinary”, in the midst of diplomatic tension between the governments of both countries.

Last Saturday the president met with the directors of Spanish companies with investments in Argentina; It is worth remembering that Spain is the second direct foreign investor in Argentina after the United States.

President Milei met with the most important businessmen in Spain. Among them we can highlight the representatives of BBVA, Santander, Iberia, Mapfre and Telefónica, and the president of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, Antonio Garamendi.

According to the newspaper El País , there were the president of Iberia , Marco Sansavini; the CEOs of Banco Santander, Abertis and Econener , Héctor Grisi, José Aljaro and Luis de Valdivia, respectively; the first vice president of Mapfre , José Manuel Inchausti; the head of BBVA for South America, Jorge Sáenz de Azcunaga; and the executive president of Telefónica Hispam , Alfonso Gómez; as well as a Day representative .

In a brief contact with Infobae, the Head of State said that the meeting was “extraordinary”, despite the fact that there was no talk of new investments in Argentina.

The president referred to the inheritance he received from Alberto Fernández 's government in terms of fiscal deficit, negative reserves and significant repressed inflation; Then he explained the measures adopted to avoid hyperinflation, in terms of recovering the fiscal surplus and the balance of the Central Bank, among other decisions.

He also made reference to “what we are doing to grow again,” after last year's 3% recession, which could be repeated this year.

In particular, “I thoroughly explained the RIGI”, the promotion regime for investments greater than USD 200 million that was approved in the Chamber of Deputies and awaits the approval of the Senate.

The meeting was extraordinary; I talked about the heritage, what we have done and a lot about what we are doing to grow again. There I explained RIGI and its instrumentation in depth (Javier Milei)

In this sense, Milei detailed to Spanish executives the implementation of this regime that the Government considers key for direct investments to begin to arrive from a series of medium-term tax benefits.

Although he focused on the rebound he expects from the economy, Milei did not want to specify when the reactivation can begin. “I don't do projections; We only deal with what depends on us and that is having the macro in order,” she stated.

The Government affirmed that the negative reactions generated by the rhetorical clashes with the Pedro Sánchez government will not influence bilateral economic relations, according to spokesperson Manuel Adorni.

However, Antonio Garamendi, president of the CEOE , expressed his rejection of Milei's comments in a report with Cadena Ser. “We profoundly reject statements that are out of tone, not in a diplomatic message, which is what you have to have. between two friendly countries, against the president of the Government and against the president's wife. It is not the place or the place , it is not what is asked of two brother countries,” said Garamendi, underscoring the importance of institutional loyalty and cordiality between both nations.

The leader of the CEOE stressed the relevance of Spanish investments in Argentina, which amount to USD 19.5 billion; Garamendi stated that “it makes absolutely no sense to attack” the President of the Spanish Government, especially during an official visit to Spain.

In this connection, Iberia clarified that in the meeting with Milei only economics was discussed.
“We share the opinion of the president of the CEOE, asking the leader for moderation, tranquility and institutional loyalty,” company sources told Europa Press. In particular, the company highlighted the relevance of its operation in Argentina, with strong profits and thousands of jobs.

Abertis , the concessionaire of several tolls, also rejected President Milei's statements, stating that “ this type of language and insults do not contribute to the coexistence of our societies and in no case should they be part of the political dialectic between two brother countries. with a long history of collaboration and defense of Democracy.” The Argentine president attended a Vox summit and met with its leader, Santiago Abascal.
