Newcomer Public Hospital or Private Hospital?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into health insurance options in Argentina and have a few questions. During a recent conversation, someone mentioned that private hospitals offer better care. Is that really true? I’ve heard that hospitals in Buenos Aires provide similar quality care, and the wait times aren’t that different. If this is the case, what’s the benefit of paying for private insurance? I might not have fully understood, so I’d appreciate any insights you can share.

Thanks a lot!

It's not about the professionals themselves, many doctors work in both public and private hospitals. The real issue is the supplies and resources that private healthcare has, which are often lacking in the public system. The facilities in public hospitals are often neglected and in poor condition, so with the limited resources they receive, the professionals do the best they can. So, it’s more about that than about who’s better. I’m a member at the Italian Hospital, and the care there is excellent. As for wait times, I’ve had to wait a month for an appointment, while other times, I’ve managed to get one within a week. It really depends on your luck and the specialty.

Hi there! It’s well known that the professionals in public hospitals are of high quality, but the wait times can be quite long, although emergencies are handled immediately. On the other hand, private hospitals offer a wide range of specialists, and you might find one with immediate availability. Additionally, private hospitals generally provide much better care compared to public ones, mainly because they manage better resources. Personally, I wouldn’t think twice about it, I could give up other services or luxuries, but I would never give up my private health care.

Do you remember this widely known case? An American, who was a victim of a robbery, ended up being attacked with a knife by the criminal, receiving ten stab wounds and nearly losing his life. He was given immediate care at Argerich Hospital (a public hospital in the Boca area), where a doctor there saved his life. The case also gained attention due to the sentencing of Officer Chocobar, who defended him. What I’m pointing out is that doctors in public hospitals are as skilled as those in private healthcare; it’s just that the Argentine healthcare system is lacking in resources.
