Restaurants seem like mostly tourists now vs. before

I have been in town the past 2 weeks and the city is fairly dead. I know it is always kind of dead this time of year but restaurants mostly feel like they are mostly tourists. I ate at Don Julio as I made reservations almost 2 months ago. Prices are up tremendously since the last time I was here! 100% all tourists. I only heard English and Portuguese. A LOT of people from Brazil here. I ate at La Mar and Osaka and both were mostly tourists but Osaka had some locals too. Prices at all restaurants have gone up a lot.

Ubers still feel cheap. To get around Palermo mostly 2,000 pesos or less. To get from Recoleta to Palermo under 3,800 pesos or less. It will be interesting to see how tourism does if things get more expensive. Big protest downtown today but I avoided it and it couldn't be felt in Palermo.

What a great city. People seem beaten up a bit. Everyone was talking about how bad the economy is.

You are correct. Prices have gotten crazy! Don Julio is outrageous. But there are still lines as you mentioned it's ALL tourists now. Many restaurants are all tourists only. My local friends stopped eating out now. I agree many from Brazil here. Prices there are crazy too.

Uber started going up too. They have a surcharge for fuel now.

I don't think anyone can doubt that prices have gone up quite a bit at restaurants. Even at US dollar equivalent prices. It's felt more at touristy places around the city. Many nice places are mostly tourists and also wealthy locals. There is a lot of wealthy locals that are going to be fine no matter what happens with the economy.

Tourism is up to the same as before COVID. Look at the link below. Over 2 million tourists a year. You aren't imagining hearing so much Portuguese. Look at the numbers and Americans and Europeans are only about 20% of tourists. Nothing to sneeze at but mostly from other countries. Lots of room for tourism to grow here but people exaggerate tourism importance. The government needs to fix the economy other than tourism.

GDP of Argentina last year was $640 BILLION. Argentina has potential with all the natural resources but they have to fix things.

Some restaurants are laughing all the way to the bank with tourists. And some tourists are happy to pay USA type prices for their IG photos. Every time I walk by Don Julio there is a line. Same now at El Preferido. That owner should just keep buying up fancy restaurants and sticking it to tourists.

the next time you see that guy buy a place , ask if you can become a partner. You will never lose with that guy.

What other restaurants does this owner own? I read about Don Julio and this other place. Does he own others? Let me know so I can make a list to avoid!
