The former diplomatic agent warned about the consequences that the violation of the Antarctic Treaty would bring. “It would be a tragedy for humanity if competition broke out for the exploitation of oil resources,” he said.

“You cannot explore in Antarctica,” said former ambassador Diego Guelar.

After the publication of a report by a Russian news agency on the discovery of a giant hydrocarbon reserve in the Antarctic area , warnings appeared from different sectors regarding a possible violation of the Antarctic Treaty. In fact, one of the voices that spoke out this Wednesday was that of the former ambassador to the US and the European Union, among other countries, Diego Guelar, who warned about a possible conflict between the countries if this information were made official.

“Russia discovers oil and gas reserves in British Antarctic territory. It contains an estimated value of 511 billion barrels of oil , 10 times the production of the North Sea in the last 50 years,” BRICS News , the official X channel of the group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa,.

Given this, Guelar flatly denied that Russian exploration could take place in Antarctica, an area where, in addition to Argentina, the United Kingdom and Chile also dispute space. “ Categorically, you cannot explore in Argentine Antarctica, as long as the Antarctic Treaty is in force . There is a plenary meeting of the treaty in August of this year, which will surely ratify that it cannot be done. And if it were possible, it would unleash a conflict between the countries in the area where the oil would be detected. “It claims national sovereignty, starting with Argentina, Chile and England , with the Malvinas and other islands in the South Atlantic,” he said, speaking to Eduardo Feinmann's program on Radio Miter .

The Antarctic Treaty is an international agreement signed in 1959 by Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the Union of Southern Africa, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States . There it is specified that Antarctica will be used “ exclusively for peaceful purposes .”

The former diplomatic agent also highlighted that the information was not officially released. “ Russia itself has not officially reported, it is just a journalistic story .” It does not exist as official data, and it would be a tragedy for humanity if competition were unleashed for the exploitation of oil resources . It would be very complicated for the countries directly involved, due to sovereign claims, and even more so for the world, because it would affect Antarctica,” he added.

Many times we do not give it the importance that the Antarctic Treaty has . It is the greatest achievement in Argentine foreign policy, as a contribution to international relations, the existence of that treaty, that Argentina has always supported it and that, in fact, Buenos Aires is the permanent secretariat of the treaty. We have to be very proud of being the main people responsible for making Antarctica a place of research, not exploration, nor exploitation,” he explained.

The conflict in the Middle East

Guelar also spoke about the position adopted by the Argentine Government in the Middle East conflict, between Israel and Palestine . “I believe that at this moment, the Government is expressing to us the entirety of an Argentine position, for which we should be very proud to be very clear spokespersons. We have 76 years of friendship and association with Israel , as a fruitful and permanent fact,” he stated.

In fact, the former ambassador recalled the attacks suffered by Argentina in the '90s. “ 30 years ago, Iran and its terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah, declared war on us with two horrific attacks on Argentina. Without a doubt, we are not neutral in this conflict , we are on Israel's side,” he added.

And he revealed: “There is a third element that has been lost, and that is very important: 14 years ago the Palestinian national authority was recognized as a complete embassy, so today there is a Palestinian ambassador in Argentina , who has the same status than the Israeli ambassador or the American ambassador. That is to say, we have recognized a State that does not yet exist . This means that Argentina has a lot of commitment to solving the Middle East conflict, for the recognition of two States that coexist in peace between Israel and Palestine. This is not sufficiently expressed publicly, which does not alter the position of accompanying, supporting and being in solidarity with the defense of the security of the State of Israel."

I wonder what would happen if Russia just ignored all the warnings and just started with the oil exploration and removal. Sounds like another potential conflict.
