A group of senators asked to reverse the salary increase that was announced this Wednesday

After this Wednesday it emerged that the senators will once again receive a salary increase for which they will earn 8 million pesos per month, presidents of different parliamentary blocs presented a request to roll back the increase.

At the end of the night, the request through which they seek to clarify the salary situation of the legislators entered the upper house's ticket table.

“On 04/18/24, Draft Resolution 615/24 was approved in the chamber, through which a modification of the per diems to be received by senators was established starting in the month of May; clearly expressing that on this occasion the diet established through the aforementioned regime will not be modified, until a new settlement system is determined based on the various projects that are pending treatment in relation to this matter," states the text directed to the head of the Parliamentary Body, Victoria Villarruel.

In this framework, they “expressly” requested that “the settlement be as it was carried out the previous month, without considering the increases provided to the staff of the Senate of the Nation . ” The letter was signed by senators Juliana Di Tullio, José Mayans, Carlos Espínola, Eduardo Vischi, Juan Carlos Romero, Ezequiel Atauche and Carlos Arce .

After the scandal and the agreement of all political forces that raised the diet of the legislators of the Upper House, the increase in May is a consequence of the parity of the workers of the National Congress .

In that aspect, the workers of the Legislative Palace will now have an increase in May of 9% - 2% retroactive to April and 7% from May - and since the legislators' diet was hooked to the parity, theirs will also adjust that percentage .

Beyond the request presented, the project to roll back the increases must be discussed in session. Until that happens, the increase will remain in force, going from $7 million gross to $8 million, starting next month . In hand, during the last month they collected $4.5 million and now they will exceed 5 million pesos. For now, the increase will be received by the 72 senators that make up the Upper House.

The text that refers to the allowances that the blocks agreed upon with Villarruel indicates that they will be made up of 2,500 modules -of $1,800-, plus an additional 1,000 modules for representation expenses and 500 additional modules for uprooting. Regarding this last point, only four do not currently charge it. In addition, one diet will be added to the current 12 to compensate for the bonus.

The increase was voted on in the chamber. Although the libertarian legislators indicated that they did not accompany him because they understood that politics had to make the effort, none of them donated it or did anything about it as other leaders in that same situation did.

The salary increase that had generated rejection from a large part of society also caused the deputies to raise their demands to the president of the Chamber, Martín Menem, who promised that they would address the issue once the debate on the Bases law was concluded . This happened a month ago and there was no change.

Until before this new increase in allowances, parliamentarians in the Lower House earned between $2.5 and $3 million less than their peers in the Upper House. “We also rent, you also have expenses for living here and for our houses to be in the provinces, and we charge just over a million. of pesos,” complained a deputy from the dialogue opposition.
