This week there will be new days of protest at the UBA

Authorities, teachers and students from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and other high national universities are holding a new day of protests today against the budget adjustment carried out by President Javier Milei in the sector. The demands, which coincide with the fourth week of the start of the school year, will include visibility measures such as street actions and public classes, and a 48-hour strike on Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11.

This Tuesday, one of the central events will take place at the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FCEyN) , where the authorities called for an official activity at 1 p.m. to carry out a symbolic hug in the “ Cero+Infinito ” building, located in Ciudad University. “ Given the budget situation, we invite the entire community to participate in a symbolic hug in defense of science and the public university ,” they quoted from the official website of the university.

Since the beginning of Milei's administration, the full authorities of the UBA and the rest of the national universities have warned about the critical budget situation. The thing is that, with the extension of the 2023 Budget, the funds allocated by the Casa Rosada for the operation of higher education are insufficient to meet the current obligations and expenses of each of the institutions.

On April 4 there was a national strike by university unions that coincided with various street and public actions. One of them was on the steps of the Faculty of Law under the slogan “ Win the street, so as not to lose the classroom with the modality of public classes, promoted by Judge Alejandro Slokar. In addition, there were marches and flag-waving in different academic units, where the central event was held at the Faculty of Medical Sciences. In parallel, from social networks, the UBA installed a virtual campaign this month with the slogan “ Let's take care of what works ”, an initiative that is accompanied by the Federation of University Students of the UBA (FUBA) with a collection of signatures to prevent the closure of the institution.

Today, the academic community of the Faculty of Exactas y Naturales will give the university a "symbolic hug" at the headquarters of the Cero+Infinito building

Today's official activity will take place at the Faculty of Exactas, but there will also be other actions at other locations. In the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters , since yesterday the student center has been carrying out activities together with the AGD, Feduba and Aduba and APUBA unions with public classes, flag-waving, open radio and cacerolazos.

“This week we are going to develop multiple actions outside the Faculty so that neighbors know about the risk that the university system is running at this moment,” said Christopher Loyola , president of the Student Center of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (CEFyL). . “In May, universities across the country may stop operating and we are not going to sit idly by. So that June is not the last month of classes, we will make April a month of struggle in unity among all the actors who make up the public university,” he added.

From Monday, April 8 to Friday, April 12 , there will be traveling classrooms on Puan Street , between José Bonifacio and Pedro Goyena, throughout the day. On Wednesday the 10th there will be a flag-waving at 6:00 p.m. at the door of “Filo” and then marching at 8:00 p.m. towards Puan and Rivadavia with a bang to demand a “budget increase for universities, the educational ticket and a salary increase for teaching workers and non-teachers.”

A nationwide protest

In all the faculties of the country there will be forceful measures on April 10 and 11 with a double day of strike and visibility of 48 hours , as resolved by the Trade Union Front of the National Universities that brings together the main unions of the activity such as Conadu, Conadu Historica, Fedun, Fagdut, Fatun, CTERA and the Argentine University Federation (FUA). This union group decided to call a federal university march for Thursday, April 25 . It will be the first massive protest action in the university sector since the beginning of the libertarian administration, after union actions and specific “drip” measures.

“The critical salary and budget situation of the National Universities and the Public System of Science and Technology caused by the Milei government, the general attack that the government party makes on education equating it with indoctrination and the recent declaration of one of its main references, Benegas Lynch – who demands freedom to legitimize child labor against the right to compulsory education, raise the need for a response in unity: unity to defend public, free, secular and quality universities,” they noted. this union group in a statement.

“Let's defend the public university; let us defend teaching, non-teaching and researcher salaries; let us defend scholarships, the educational ticket and those conditions that make it possible for the majority of students to sustain themselves within the university. Reinstatement of those dismissed in the State now,” the text states.

The economic difficulties are similar throughout the national territory. During the weekend, the National University of Comahue went into default . “Please, let's not look the other way. Let's not be part of the generation that lets the Public University die," they expressed in a statement from "Let's Defend the UNCo", a group made up of students, teachers and non-teachers," the text noted.

The protest of teaching unions at the Faculty of Medicine, last week

For its part, the Faculty of Exact Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) denounced the sharp increase in current expenses, after receiving a bill for 14 million pesos for electricity, which rose 400% compared to previous. “It has been very terrible news that puts us on the verge of being able to guarantee the basic functions of our academic unit,” said dean Mauricio Erben in radio statements.

Despite the claims, the national government minimized the proposals of the higher education authorities . The presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni , assured that the Executive Branch made operating budget readjustments of up to 70% and considered that the problem that the universities pose is not imminent. “It is a problem of lack of funds, that because of an electricity bill they are not going to close the universities. There is a budgetary issue for discussion in the background if the budget items are not increased. If necessary, it will be discussed,” he indicated.

According to the vice-rector of the UBA, Emiliano Yacobitti , the spokesperson “blatantly lied” when pointing out that there was an increase in funds for the UBA. “During 2023, the budget accrued in operating expenses (education and hospitals) was $26,152 million. The accumulated inflation from January 23 to March 24 is 325.1%. The result? “A real need of almost $90,000 million for the UBA.” And he completed: “What did the government really assign? Barely $20 billion, including the supposed 70% increase. This implies a brutal cut of 80% in operating expenses, seriously affecting hospitals and universities.”

For the moment, the strategy of the entire university and scientific system is to combine traditional union actions with creative visibility in public spaces. Paraphrasing the slogan of the Argentine Soccer Team that led it to win the Cup in Qatar 2022, this weekend the federal festival “ I Choose to Grow-Science x Argentina ” was organized in the squares of more than 60 locations throughout the country. Thousands of citizens were able to come to the stands and educational actions to disseminate the sector. The scientists showed their proposals for greater budget allocation and an end to layoffs and closures of areas.
