The subway fare increase has accumulated a 589% increase so far in 2024

Starting Tuesday, October 1 , the cost of a subway ticket in the City of Buenos Aires will increase to $757, which represents an adjustment of 16.46% compared to the previous value. This measure impacts both subway and premetro users , who will also see an update in their rates. In the case of the premetro, the ticket will cost $264.95. This increase is part of the last stage of the tariff adjustment authorized by the City Government , which since the beginning of 2024 has led to significant increases in the cost of underground transportation, accumulating a rise of 589% so far this year. According to the authorities, the update of the fare value was originally scheduled for August, but was postponed due to a necessary update in the computerized collection system.

How the rates will be:

With this update, subway fares will be as follows for those who use the registered SUBE Card :

  • 1 to 20 trips: $757.00
  • 21 to 30 trips: $605.60
  • 31 to 40 trips: $529.90
  • 41 trips or more: $454.20

For the premetro, the fare will be $264.95.

On the other hand, those who do not have a registered SUBE Card will have to pay a higher differential value. In this case, the subway ticket will rise to $859.07, while the premetro fare will rise to $300.67.

Impact of increases

The new monthly adjustment of 16.46% is added to the previous increases that have affected the pockets of Buenos Aires citizens. Since April 2024, the price of a subway ticket has risen by 359%, and if we consider the accumulated figure for the year, the increase reaches almost 600%, significantly exceeding the accumulated inflation in the same period .

Users without a registered SUBE Card must pay a differential rate

This increase is part of a broader plan by the Buenos Aires government to adjust the prices of public services and reduce spending on subsidies. The successive increases also respond to a context of greater inflationary pressure and the need to adapt public transport fares to the cost of operation, argue the authorities.

What is happening with the SUBE Network?

The SUBE Network , the system of discounts for frequent passengers, will continue to be in force. This system offers discounts of 20%, 30% and 40% on fares when users exceed 20, 30 or 40 monthly trips, respectively.

In addition, free passes for retirees and pensioners, people with disabilities, transplant recipients and those on the transplant waiting list will remain in effect. The student ticket , which allows students in pre-school, primary and secondary school to travel free of charge, will also remain unchanged.

Falling use of public transport The increase in fares occurs in a context of a fall in the number of users of the subway and other means of public transport in the City of Buenos Aires . According to recent data, the number of passengers has decreased steadily throughout the year, as transport costs rise and citizens' purchasing power is affected by inflation and the devaluation of the peso.

Many users are looking for cheaper transport alternatives, such as bicycles, electric scooters or even opting for shared private vehicles, which has led to a notable decrease in the use of mass public transport.

On the other hand, the increase in subway fares coincides with adjustments in other services, such as trains and buses, which have also experienced increases this year, although to a lesser extent.

In addition to the fare adjustments, the Buenos Aires City Government continues to implement measures aimed at improving the efficiency of the public transport system. Recently, infrastructure upgrades have been made to several subway lines and new technologies have been incorporated into the fare collection system, such as automatic SUBE Card validators.
