Télam employees will continue to be furloughed for seven more days starting this Monday and the voluntary retirement program was implemented for all staff, both permanent employees and contracted employees. This was reported through two statements. For a week now the national news agency service has been suspended and the 700 workers are on leave.

Through a statement signed by the auditor Diego Chaher , the news of the “ extension of the work waiver ” was announced . “All Télam SE staff are informed that the waiver of paid labor debit benefits is extended for seven (7) days from midnight on March 11, 2024,” indicates the document released.

In addition, another second statement was shared notifying employees of the possibility of voluntarily leaving the news agency. “Within the framework of a State restructuring process initiated by the President of the Nation, the implementation of the Voluntary Retirement program is announced , for thirty (30) days, for all personnel, permanent and hired for a fixed term, of Télam SE, in the terms of the file attached at the bottom of this communication.”

Since Monday, March 4, when the headquarters located on 531 Bolívar Street was fenced off, the wired news service has been interrupted and the website has been suspended with a description that indicates “page under reconstruction.” In turn, that same day, the employees were discharged. The notice that was sent to them indicated that as of that date, each worker was “exempted from providing their labor debt for a period of 7 (seven) days with pay starting at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 of the current.” However, now the measure has been renewed and workers will remain in the same situation until next Sunday.

The announcement about voluntary retirement for Télam employees

President Javier Milei had announced the closure of the Télam Agency during his opening speech to ordinary sessions in Congress , last Friday, March 1. “We have made progress in reducing public spending , the deepest in our history, making a 5-point cut in GDP in just one month,” the head of state began, focusing on his economic plan to reduce state spending, a central issue. during his election campaign.

And when reviewing the measures evaluated to achieve his objective, he referred to “firing ghost public employees, eliminating social plans for people who did not need them and ending the intermediaries of poverty,” among others. And he stated: “Although there has been liquefaction, there has been much more chainsawing, all for politics.”

It was after that moment that he announced his new decisions and stated that he would move forward with closing the agency. “We are going to close it because it has been used in recent decades as a Kirchnerist propaganda agency ,” he argued.

Workers of the state company rejected the measure

His announcement caused many repercussions, mainly from those who work at the state agency. That same Friday, the company published a cable that emphasized the President's statements. “ Télam is the only agency in the country with a network of correspondents in all Argentine provinces and has multiple cooperation agreements with international agencies that make it possible to produce and provide first-hand information on events that occur in the world for various media, companies, organizations and institutions” , they specified.

In this sense, after the office was completely fenced preventing entry, the employees held a symbolic hug to the building and a protest to repudiate the actions of the national government.

Télam was created 78 years ago. It is the largest news agency in the country and has 700 employees who produce around 500 articles per day for dissemination.
