According to the consulting firm Opina Argentina, the evaluation of the Government's performance fell six points and is at the lowest level since the beginning of the mandate. Economic policy and education are the topics where management deteriorated the most.

Although 4 out of 10 Argentines still have a positive evaluation of President Javier Milei 's management , the public image of the administration suffered an unprecedented drop in opinion indicators at the beginning of September. The evaluation of the government's performance fell six points and is at its lowest level since the beginning of the mandate.

“There is a marked deterioration in public perception of the national government,” said the consulting firm Opina Argentina in its report , which analyzed the government’s performance in 1,633 cases, consulted online between September 9 and 15. In that month, the image of the national administration fell six points : 41% evaluated Milei’s administration positively, while 56% considered it negatively .

In the previous survey, in August, the government's performance had a negative opinion of 50% and a positive opinion of 47%. This time, the unfavorable opinion grew and the opposite opinion fell. According to the series of surveys by the consulting firm, it is detected that this is the first time this year that the negative opinion has separated from the positive opinion.

56% of respondents had a negative opinion of the Government's management

The segment where support fell the most was among the voters of La Libertad Avanza in the 2023 general elections. Women and residents of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) are the other segments that most explain the drop in the assessment of the national government in all the areas surveyed.

Economic policy and education are the topics that fall the most, while decisions on public works and infrastructure are the worst evaluated by those surveyed: they barely have a 25% approval rating and 63% reject them. The evaluation of public health does not even reach 30% approval (28%) and six out of 10 consider them negatively.

Aid to the poor (60%), education (58%), economic policy (56%) and security (54%) are the other areas in which the Government has more rejections than approvals . Compared to last month, education policy is the one that has grown the most in a negative sense (8 points) and, consequently, the one that has fallen the most in positive evaluation (9 points).

The evaluation of government areas is mostly negative by respondents

The perception of the government's actions regarding public universities also suffered. In April, the month of the massive mobilization to Plaza de Mayo, half of those surveyed supported the government in this conflict. In September, after the legislative debate to improve funding for universities and teacher salaries, and Milei's announcement that he would veto this law, support fell to 35% (from 49% in April) and almost six out of ten (58%) reject the official policy on this issue.

In this sense, it remains to be seen how the measures announced by the education sector for the coming weeks will impact the image of the presidential administration. The unions linked to education announced that they will go on strike on September 26 and 27 and on October 2 they will mobilize to the National Congress . The government assigned $3.8 billion to the universities, but the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) is demanding $7.2 million to be able to operate. In addition, the suspension of the Teacher Incentive Fund since January remains in place.

In line with the decline in the assessment of the management, the idea that the country with Milei is on the right track also registers a deterioration. From May to September, according to the survey, it went from 50% with a positive view to 41%. And almost six out of ten consider that with things as they are, the Government is going in the wrong direction .

Opinions on the path the Government is taking

“Considering that Milei's popularity remains stable at around 50%, the growing discontent that is observed seems to be, for the moment, more related to the management than to the president himself,” concluded Opina Argentina , which in its September report asks: “The image of the government is wearing down, a new cycle in public opinion?”

According to a study by the same pollster published earlier this month , although Milei's image had dropped slightly, he was still the most highly regarded politician, closely followed by his vice president, Victoria Villarruel , with 49% approval, 50% rejection and 1% indifference.

In third place was the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich , who surpassed former president Mauricio Macri , the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof ; the Minister of Economy, Luis “Toto” Caputo , and the social leader Juan Grabois.
