At Casa Rosada they believe that it is enough to wage “the cultural battle” before society. They admit that some claims may have legitimacy, but they are confident that union members have “the worst image” among corporations.

Javier Milei spoke out against the general strike

After a day of general strike, the Government decided to be indifferent, without last-minute calls to the heads of the CGT or urgent calls to mend the relationship. They maintained their tough stance despite threats from some leaders regarding new force measures of longer duration, even 36 hours. Instead, they redoubled the bet, and issued a series of strong messages to try to expose the union members to public opinion.

Javier Milei's advisors insist that the strike and protests promoted by the central office do not weaken the Government, but rather benefit it. They start from the basis that there is a difference between generalized support for the demands - which, they admit, have support - and support for the conduct of forceful measures. “Unions have the worst percentage of positive image of all sectors, including Justice and the Police, it is impressive. What they ask for may have legitimacy, they do not,” said a front-line collaborator of the President this afternoon, from his office. Through the window, the city looked deserted and silent.

At the Casa Rosada they are convinced that Pablo Moyano, Héctor Daer and Carlos Acuña “are doing them a favor” by stopping, and they launched a campaign to exacerbate it. The only retaliation they took, for now, was the announcement that they would deduct the day from the state members who joined. But the rest were messages addressed to society, from the Conference Room of the Casa Rosada and from official networks, including that of the president.

Milei posted a modified image of himself, which showed him wearing a T-shirt that said “I don't stop.” And its communication specialists worked on a report that they presented on the Office of the President account with infographics that reveal, according to their calculations, that the strike will have a cost of “more than US$500 million” for the economy. In addition, they compared the figures with the basic basket, so that users better understood the magnitude of the loss.

In the same sense, they accused the union members of “extorting” the workers who did want to attend by applying the historic tactic of stopping transportation. “We remind you that line 134 is still open to report extortion,” said the spokesperson, Manuel Adorni. The first strike had been on January 24, when only a month and a half of Milei's term had passed, something that different officials were in charge of highlighting then, and that they repeated today.

Although the Government minimizes the impact of a second general strike in five months of administration, they admit that it has consequences for the image that Milei tries to project to foreign investors, on whom the recovery of the economy will ultimately depend when the capacity of adjustment reaches the limit.

After the owner of Tesla, Elon Musk , called to invest in the country, today the main media in the world reflected a situation of instability in the country, which could be repeated if there is no type of agreement. This was warned, for example, by the delegate of Unión Ferroviaria, Rubén “Pollo” Sobrero. “ I was always critical of Alberto Fernández's management, which was a disaster, and also of Mauricio Macri. I always said that he was attacking the workers. But now he jumped and made the situation worse. If there is no response with this 24-hour strike, we will do another 36 ″ strike, he said, in a veiled threat.

Although in public they chose the strategy of showing themselves on a war footing, under the surface there were some attempts at rapprochement with the unions, which in Balcarce 50 they slipped but kept, at all costs, under absolute secrecy. Last week, the Minister of the Interior, Guillermo Francos, had said that he would try to "deactivate" the measure, but his efforts, if they existed, were unsuccessful. Instead, the harshest position was imposed, from collaborators like Santiago Caputo, who consider that measures like today's have no legitimacy and are unsustainable.
