Casa Curutchet , the only work by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in Latin America, is in the process of being sold, according to sources from the College of Architects of the Province of Buenos Aires (CAPBA) who informed Infobae . The value of the transaction is estimated at approximately USD 900,000, although it has not yet been definitively established because it is a direct negotiation between the entity and the owner of the architectural jewel located on Avenida 53 at 30, between 1 and 2 in La Plata.
The emblematic house would be acquired by the CAPBA, which rented the property for 33 years to a public limited company formed by some former relatives of the surgeon Pedro Domingo Curutchet, who in 1948 contacted Le Corbusier to build a house and office in La Plata, at a time when Le Corbusier was already the most renowned architect in the world.

Despite being immersed in large projects, such as the monumental city of Chandigarh in India, the architect accepted the commission, perhaps remembering his visit to Argentina in 1929. Nine months later, he sent the plans by mail and appointed his disciple, the Argentine architect Amancio Williams , author of the Casa del Puente in Mar del Plata, as Director of Works.
The Curutchet House is characterized by its innovative design and spatial fluidity that allows the visitor to experience an “architectural walk” through a ramp that connects the spaces.
“A tree planted in the small courtyard articulates the transition between the work area and the home, and its main rooms, along with the garden terrace, enjoy views of the square and the city forest. The parasols or “brise soleil” on the façade complete this unique frame, adapted to maximize light and the natural environment. It is a true architectural treasure, comparable to having a Picasso in a museum , given the historical relevance of Le Corbusier in the universal culture of the 20th century,” architect Julio Santana , director of the emblematic house, told Infobae .
For more than several decades, the Curutchet House has been managed by CAPBA (the architect Ramón Rojo presides over this entity), which has preserved and promoted its architectural value, offering visits and activities for those who want to know and enjoy it.

The famous house in La Plata gained notoriety in recent years for having been the setting for the film “El hombre de al Lado” (The Man Next Door) , directed in 2010 by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat , with outstanding performances by Daniel Aráoz and Rafael Spregelburd . The film, which won several awards at various international festivals, tells with irony the relationship between an architect who owns the house and a peculiar neighbor. Its impact helped to further consolidate the prestige of this iconic work in modern architecture.

It functions as an architectural museum and guided tours are offered.
Considered one of the most influential architects of his time, Le Corbusier ranks in the pantheon of modern architecture alongside figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Oscar Niemeyer, Walter Gropius and Alvar Aalto . His rationalist style and focus on functional design profoundly impacted the development of cities and buildings around the world.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2016, this building is not only an architectural landmark, but has also become a cultural and academic center. The purchase, which involves Curutchet's descendants, seeks to strengthen its function as a museum and space for innovation, reported those who are leading the negotiations.

Construction began in 1949 under the direction of the Argentine architect Amancio Williams , to whom Le Corbusier entrusted the project. The work was completed in 1953 and since then it has been a benchmark of modern architecture.
It has other milestones: it was declared a National Historic Monument in 1987 and of provincial and tourist interest. In 2010, the Senate of Buenos Aires declared it “of public utility and subject to expropriation” to preserve and disseminate its cultural and architectural value.

CAPBA plans to celebrate the purchase, if it is completed before the end of the year, with an exhibition in homage to architect Clorindo Testa , coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Le Corbusier sending the plans for the project.
In addition, the house will continue to offer guided tours and will become a centre for the dissemination and protection of heritage, with exhibitions, workshops and private events.

Le Corbusier designed the house on a plot of only 180 square meters between party walls, integrating the urban environment and the proximity of the forest of the city of La Plata.

Swiss legacy
Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris , known as Le Corbusier , was a Swiss architect, urban planner, theorist, painter and sculptor who became a French citizen in 1930. Born in 1887 in Switzerland and died in 1965 in France, Le Corbusier was a visionary of modern architecture, influenced by urban planning and functional design ideals that marked an era. His work encompasses not only architectural projects but also contributions in painting, sculpture and architectural theory, which consolidated his influence in the 20th century. It functions as an architectural museum and guided tours are offered.

Negotiations
Santana confirmed that the CAPBA Assembly decided to complete the purchase process initiated by its Executive Board. He stressed that “the administrative and legal steps necessary to complete the acquisition are being followed. The strategic plan for the house includes three axes: building, academic and cultural, with the aim of enhancing the museum's activities .”Construction began in 1949 under the direction of the Argentine architect Amancio Williams , to whom Le Corbusier entrusted the project.
