As kids, we all spent hours building with classic Lego bricks at home—those little plastic pieces that connect together to construct buildings , bridges, cities, and other figures . But what if that were brought to the real-life construction industry ?

A new brick system is revolutionizing the construction industry , a multi-million dollar industry constantly reinventing itself with technological advancements and sustainability as its ever-stronger pillars.

These innovative bricks allow walls to be built without any cement , which is one of the main sources of environmental pollution —it's estimated that the cement industry is responsible for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions—with blocks that fit together like a classic child's game. However, not only will this method help reduce the environmental impact of construction, it also significantly reduces construction times.

What the new Lego-like bricks look like

One of the proposals is called Linko . This system, which uses staples made from recycled plastic to connect bricks , was created by an Australian student at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) named Keagan Howell.

The operation is simple and fast: the pieces are inserted into the holes in the masonry bricks and fit together firmly and securely , without the need for nails or cement. The result? A solid, easy-to-build, and completely reusable and sustainable wall.

This new form of construction would help solve the housing crisis.Video capture

According to its creator, this new form of construction would help solve the housing crisis in both developed and low-income countries. Recycled plastic thus takes on a new life within the circular economy . Instead of accumulating as waste, it is transformed into a durable and reusable building material.

But this isn't the only option on the market. In countries like Belgium and the Netherlands, another brick is already on the market : Facadeclick . This system uses high-density polyethylene (HDPE) connectors that are also inserted into the bricks , allowing for dry assembly. Hence the "click" in its name, due to the sound they make when they click together.

One of the key advantages of this eco-friendly brick is that it allows for the disassembly and reuse of materials , thus promoting the circular economy. Moreover, it has been recognized on several occasions for initiatives and eco-labels that acknowledge its contribution to reducing waste on construction sites.

Once the bricks are laid, each row is reinforced with safety bolts , and foam is injected into the wall to improve thermal and acoustic insulation. This last step is essential to keep out the cold and outside noise.

This new approach to the industry accelerates construction by up to 40% . In addition to being faster, these systems also improve energy efficiency , because both bricks allow insulating materials to be injected between the brick layers. This not only improves the thermal and acoustic insulation of the walls , but also achieves a more efficient and sustainable construction .
