Cuevas (money exchange firms) getting Robbed!

Be careful! My friend told me they were at a Cueva in Palermo and it was getting robbed by guns with masks and guns. I never heard about this. I always wondered why thieves don't just sit outside of Western Union and rob people? Are cuevas getting robbed a thing?? Has anyone got robbed before after going to a Cueva? I am always nervous leaving these money exchange places because a thief could just follow you home.

What are some dependable places in Soho?

Yes these places get robbed from time to time. Most places are behind thick glass so it is not easy to rob them but some places that are more informal and don't have bullet proof or thick glass get robbed. I have heard of a few times. If you talk to anyone that owns one there is usually a sad story.

Soho has one right in front of Plaza Serrano. It is a legit and legal place.

I just read on another forum about one going out of business because they were robbed too many times. What a stressful business if you have to worry about that. I have gone to that one in Soho that Betsy mentioned. There is a yellow sign on the outside. It's open daily and on the weekends too. I went a few times as my Airbnb was down the street.

Cuevas definitely get robbed! Often times more than once. It's a tough business. I just had lunch with one of the biggest cuevas downtown Buenos Aires. And he told me a story of armed gunmen going in and robbing the place. Down town the big cuevas have a system where there are cameras and you only can come one person at a time behind 2 locked door system and even with that they managed to get robbed once he told me. He said probably with the help of police or people working in the building.

I asked him if they ever got robbed delivering money and he said they also got robbed. About $300,000 USD. I also have a friend that has a cueva and last year for the first time in 25 years he also got robbed. A $250,000 USD loss. With so much cash you have to be careful.

I to this day wonder why there aren't more robberies from Western Union or outside of cuevas. I figure the police just put the fear of God in these people if they do anything to affect tourism they are toast. I formally owned the largest property management company in Argentina. With hundreds of properties and tens of thousands of guests each year. Never once did I ever hear of a guest getting robbed outside of Western Union or a cueva.

These days I just use a cueva that delivers money to me. They will give you a good rate and as long as you are exchanging at least $400 to $500 USD they will deliver it to you free. I mostly just do that now. Time = Money.

The police and government won't allow tourists to get robbed. The thieves know that if they rob people outside of money exchange they will lock them up and lose keys. People seem to tolerate robbing banks but not private people exchange money.

That is cool that you can just get it delivered. On my first trip that is what we did. I was laughing as a guy shows up with this big manilla envelope. He had all of this cash but then I figured out each 1,000 bill was only worth $1 USD. 🤣 I exchanged $1,000 USD and it felt like I got monopoly money in return.

We also went to a few places and all safe to exchange.

Yes we also use a Cueva that delivers the money to us. We never have to go and pick it up. Amounts over $400. @Johnny you will be happy as now 10k notes are widely available. So a much smaller wad in your pocket!
