Newcomer Amazon - Shipping for just 5 USD

I also just asked this question but will post it here too if anyone knows the answer.

I just read this today. It is saying people getting the shipments have to have a level 3 tax key from AFIP. What about people that are tourists or just foreigners living there? On Amazon it shows you can upload a passport but will we have problems if we ship something via Amazon to Argentina?

My friend there ordered something from Amazon before. She doesn't have a DNI and used her passport. I think it was just a shirt. It arrived but she did get hit up for a little bit more customs tax when it came. But this was 2 months ago. I'm not sure if something changed. This new promotion just sounds like they added $5 flat shipping to some items. But it sounds like not much else has changed.

It looks like Amazon succeeded with the $5 shipping, and now they offer free shipping on selected products. Maybe this info will be helpful to someone!

It is for selected stuff over $99.

Just a heads up, don’t buy anything from iHerb if it’s getting shipped to Argentina. I just lost an $80 shipment because Customs requires me to hire a special broker, get extra paperwork, and all that stuff. They claimed it’s food (not supplements) and that’s the rule. Done deal.

This was announced yesterday. Great news. Still 21% IVA tax but progress.

This will be HUGE for us with Amazon coming here. Still some kinks to work out as I ordered some stuff with the $5 shipping and they get held up at customs. But it will get better and better. Prices should continue to go down too. First time that many of these local companies had competition. Everyone will just go to Amazon if prices are too high. This is going to be great for consumers!

Is it really up to $3,000 USD per shipment?? How many times will they allow this each year? My girlfriend read it but doesn't believe it because she said it's too good to be true. Also, she reminded me that AFIP will be watching because they monitor how much you are declaring in income each year so anyone that orders stuff will automatically be put on a watch list. I"m not sure about how it works with foreigners that are living here without residency. I saw you can put your passport information in it.

That would be hilarious if expats that are perma-tourists start going hog wild ordering stuff and then they got busted in a honeypot sting going to their places. :ROFLMAO: Probably won't happen but would be funny as they would have their addresses and passport numbers. I'm told they will use all of this information in the future. Don't locals still have to pay some higher exchange rate to use their credit cards for purchases outside of Argentina?

It is true they will have passport numbers and addresses for the Amazon shipments. Not sure if the government would try to use this for residency purposes. That is a good idea if they wanted to see residency status for tourists overstaying. I just don't think Argentina really cares about this. Maybe in the future but not now. They are struggling with tourism as it is.

People buying on Amazon aren't using their credit cards otherwise they would have to pay the dolar turista rate. You can use other ways around this. Many have accounts outside of Argentina and also Uala has ways they can get around this too. They won't be able to stop this once they open the flood gates. So happy for the competition. Local companies are going to have to compete or die.

Can't wait to see Amazon distribution centers here in Buenos Aires. That is probably a ways off but eventually could happen. We will know progress is made once you see the Amazon delivery drivers all over BA delivering stuff. Once that happens, the young will never ever again vote for the left again. The 21% IVA still will sting so lots of mules still but many businesses like Grabr will probably disappear depending on how expensive Amazon decides to deliver stuff here.

Let's see if this really works. This assumes that packages won't get stolen along the way. Grabr works very good or if you get a relationship with a specific person you can have them be your mule. Prices will come way down with Grabr so that will be good. Aerobox also works well but prices after December should go down. If Amazon can get smooth and quick delivery most people will probably just do that if they are paying only IVA.

That would be quite a sight to see Amazon drivers all over. Mercado Libre sucks! I have had so many issues with them. If they don't improve Amazon will eat their lunch.

Locals are considering buying the latest iPhone since it’s much cheaper than purchasing it here.

The real price here: $ 3.111.100
