Chori - Delicious Choripan Restaurant in Palermo Soho

Today I went to one of my favorite places for Choripan. It's a small little place and they don't have much on the menu except for Choripan, fries, potato salad and some drinks. I find it really flavorful. I typically come each time I'm in town. It's interesting to see the inflation in pesos. I use a travel app called Swarm on my iPhone that I always check in at restaurants and I upload photos and I looked at prices of the menu the last few times I have been here. I'll upload below.

All the Choripan is delicious here. Naturally since it's in Soho it's going to be much more expensive vs. other places around town. But I'm always in this area as I own an apartment close by. My favorite is the Cerco Clásico which is 5,400 pesos now.

Now take a look at the exact same menu from November 12, 2023 and you can see the same thing I had was 3,100 pesos. It's a real life example of what the locals go through. This is all in the span of 7 months.



Then look at this photo I took from June 14, 2023 and the same thing was 1,750 pesos.

Yes, me too. It's good but they put their own little spin on it. They put some sliced pineapples on top so if you don't like sweet you can take it off or ask them to do it without the pineapples. They are always really friendly in there and something interesting is there are lots of locals here eating all the time as well. There is usually a small line but they move them pretty quickly. The potato salad is 3,800 pesos for a little container. Expensive by local standards probably but I always come here each time I'm in town for my choripan fix.

I love Choripan! I will check this place out. I have walked around Soho a good bit but never passed this place. That photo looks delicious! The choripan I have had was in a hot dog type bun but this looks like a sandwich. Going to swing by this week.

Wow that choripan very expensive now! We used to pay there 1,000 pesos for the choripan there. I haven't return so long but that very expensive for choripan.

I love this place.

I've been there like three times now and I always get the Chorichanga. It's got the "spicy" symbol next to it, but it's not spicy at all. It's become one of my favorite sandwiches.

I agree! Thanks to this post I checked the place out. I also love that spicy Chorichanga although as you mentioned it has no real heat on it. Love this place even though they are more expensive than other Choripans in BA. The workers are always very nice too. This place must make a small fortune as there is always a line no matter what time I go there.

Wow I haven't been here in a while. Last time I was there it was still busy. Lots of tourists. It's crazy seeing the prices of this same place over the past 2 years. I first came here last year when I got to BA and the price in dollars I just saw on a receipt on my credit card was $2.75 dollars. So at $8 now in less than a year it's a good example of how much food prices have skyrocketed in BA.

I wish there were more price comparisons like this. Does anyone know of any websites that compare the price of the same thing over time in Argentina?

I don't know of any places that document/track prices over years but I often times just take photos of places I go. I agree with you that it would be cool to see historical prices over time. My kids love Choripan and we came here often last summer. I remember the exchange rate was around 600 pesos to $1 US and the price was 1,750 pesos so just under $2.95 for each so if they are 9,400 pesos now that is a big jump up.

I kind of use Chori as my BA "Big Mac" price index.

Darn that is a jump up from when I went there. People can't think that is affordable for a simple choripan. How much can prices go up? Other than tourists and some rich locals I wouldn't think that many restaurants will stay busy if the price jump has been so extreme. I read about other places closing down in Palermo so I guess if you can't get enough people you have to close. If inflation is slowing down why do they keep increasing the prices so much? $8 for a glorified hot dog is a lot.

The problem is even though inflation is slowing down, it is still very high. It has come down to 4% a month but that is a normal annual inflation for most countries. This also doesn't account for jumps up in utilities like water, electricity and gas. Some of these prices have jumped up 200% in the past year. This will get passed on to the customer or if they can't they have to close down. There is a limit to what people will pay for any food.

Some restaurants are closing down because the costs are going up too much. Also, employees are expecting higher wages too. Not an easy situation during a recession.

This thread is a good example of general price inflation in restaurants in Buenos Aires. You can see prices for over 20 months what they have done. I would guess that most restaurants probably are similar. Let's see what they are charging by the end of the year. My guess is it will be higher than now. Most of these restaurants are also leasing and don't own the property so are stuck at the mercy if the rentals go up.

During a recession like now I don't think owners can raise rental prices so that is a positive. $8 bucks for a choripan is a lot.

would be an interesting thing to program with AI and a web-crawling site. it's fairly time-consuming to track the MEP and other Peso rates in Argentina a few times a day, and write it manually, so i think someone would have to be really internet- and code-savvy to do something like that. but it would be hard for the big changes, since prices were so rarely recorded anywhere other than on physical menus and in the restaurant.

Is Morcipan that blood sausage? The purple one? I tried it but did not like it. I loved choripan. I did eat here and liked it but found it was much more expensive vs the carts in Puerto Madero.

I like seeing how prices change over time. My guess is they are probably similar jumps up in all of these places. You're right @StatusNomadicus that many places do not post their prices online. A lot of the places I went to had paper menus that looked like they changed all the time. Now that inflation is slowing down hopefully they aren't changing as much but inflation sounds like it is still 5% a month. That is very high by American standards.
