As we bid farewell to 2024 and welcome 2025, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for being an integral part of our vibrant expat community. Your support, insights, and camaraderie have been invaluable throughout the past year, especially as we’ve navigated the tumultuous waters of Argentina’s economic and political landscape.

This past year has certainly been a rollercoaster ride for all of us living in and visiting Argentina. The economy has faced significant challenges, with inflation remaining a persistent concern. However, we’ve also seen glimmers of hope and positive changes under the leadership of President Javier Milei, who took office in December 2023.

Milei’s administration has implemented some bold economic reforms, including the devaluation of the peso and the elimination of certain subsidies. While these measures have undoubtedly caused short-term pain for many, he is laying the groundwork for long-term economic stability and growth.

As we look forward to 2025, let’s remain optimistic about Argentina’s future. The road ahead may not be smooth, but together, we can support each other through the challenges and celebrate the victories, both big and small.

I wish you all a very Happy New Year! May 2025 bring renewed prosperity, exciting opportunities, and countless reasons to fall in love with Argentina all over again. Let’s raise a glass of Malbec and toast to good times ahead, not just for us expats, but for all of Argentina.

Here’s to a brighter future and another year of shared experiences in this beautiful country we call home. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Thanks @earlyretirement for making this forum available. It has been a great resource for me investigating if I want to move to Buenos Aires. Thanks to all of you that share information every day. I know it is a hard year for many of you so hang in there. Happy new year.

A happy new year to all of you. Very tough year for many of us. It has got expensive here for some of us and on the brink of leaving. Hope things turn around soon. These high prices are not sustainable on local salaries. Hope things change positively.
Tough indeed. Prices are too dear now. I am doing what I thought I would never have to do. Leaving Argentina. I just put my apartment up to lease and hoping things turn around but I will head to somewhere cheaper.

2024 has been a tough year for most.

I make my cash in FX - so my earnings that I spend and pay taxes on in Argentina are way down in real terms.
I was busgetting for the USD at 1500 and this clearly didnt happen.

Mrs GlasgowJohn earns in Pesos - she hasnt had a bad year but no way has she made the same amount as last year. She estimates she is down about 30%.

If the 1200/1300 rate holds I should be ok for 2025 if new business comes in at the current rate.

The biq question is what will happen to inflation next year?
Wat wil happen to the USD?
Will the chainsaw still be active ? And if so in what areas?

Still tonight is party night.

I can look at things coldly on Thursday morning.

Happy New Year @GlasgowJohn. Wondering how you have been. Have not seen you post much. I don't post much now that I am in Spain but I still miss Argentina. I am in the same boat as you earning in Dollars with my remote job. It was too painful this year and we finally threw in the towel. I think it might get back to 1500 but one never knows! I got depressed watching the blue dollar fall further and further this year.

I think Milei is making some good changes but the turn around I believe will take a while to turn around. It is good to see inflation go down but I wonder if the peso will need to get devalued like Brazil and many other countries around the world. Let's see what happens once Trump is in office. These tariffs would be bad for Argentina if the USA really pushes forward with them.

The chainsaw was brutal. I wonder how much more can be cut. Argentina needs to grow besides just cutting expenses. Have fun tonight. I am in NYC and it is supposed to rain tonight. Very cold so bad luck with the weather.

I was wondering how expats making their salaries in other currencies felt with the exchange rate. It is difficult to know what is true or not @GlasgowJohn because I read a lot of posts on X and in the press that talk about all the salary increases. Some articles say they are more than inflation and some say they are less. I guess it differs on jobs but difficult to understand how there can be a big argument about this.

I always read articles that talk about "real prices" and it is confusing because they are factoring in inflation but even the inflation % seems to be confusing. I keep reading all these experts talk about how the peso is overvalued and there needs to be a devaluation but won't inflation spike up again once that happens? And what about the IMF if they give more money? What will that do to exchange rate?

Happy new year to all. I'm still as much in love with Argentina today vs. my first trip so many years ago. I feel fortunate to own a place in BA and look forward to spending more time there.

Feliz año everyone. @GlasgowJohn I'm sure if we knew the answer to those questions we would be wealthy. Selfishly I hope the blue dollar goes up. It was getting painful but much easier at 1,200 vs 1000.

Very tough indeed. Things are not as good as the government is portraying. If things were going well Argentina wouldn't need another huge bailout by the IMF putting them into even more debt!
