Is Skype closing down? I heard they are closing.

I have used a Skype number for years while traveling. It has been essential for me because I have banks that I need to get access codes when I travel or need to access my online account. It was very easy for me to just refill my skype cellphone number and also use it to make cheap calls around the world. I have loved it. But a friend told me they are shutting down. I don't understand this as I thought Microsoft purchased them. Can anyone confirm if this is true? I did not get any notice about this.

I looked it up online and it appears to be true but wanted to confirm as it sounds strange they would close down. I know many that use it.

I have also used it forever. Microsoft did buy it but they are trying to convert people over to their Microsoft Teams platform. I believe it's free but I don't like Microsoft products. I am not sure how different it will be from Skype.

If you are using Zoom you might want to check out their Number Cloud VoIP service. It's affordable and you can get a local number and make unlimited calls and get a USA or Canada phone line. You also get messages too.

  • Domestic SMS & MMS
  • Unlimited calling within US and Canada
  • Advanced phone features
  • Make & receive calls from multiple devices and/or apps

Wow didn't hear about this. I have used Skype forever. Hard to believe they are getting rid of it. I use Google Voice too but I don't like it as much as Skype but that should work for SMS messages.

Eveything Microsoft buys they seem to destroy or the product goes downhill fast. Here is a post on Reddit of alternatives.

I posted on that Reddit link. I will repost here.

Lowkey panicking. We use Skype for our business, we receive calls and make calls. The mobile app is very handy.

I need a solution (other than teams) that can do the following:

- Works on iPhone

- I can call in and out.

- If I do not answer, it can forward the call to another UK number.

- Allows me to transfer my two Skype numbers (one UK and one HK number).

- Pay as you go preferred

- Established company so they don't go bust in a year

I didn't use Skype since I have a US cellphone number but now that I am planning on moving internationally I am researching it. I came across this other company Sonetel. Here is a blog about it.

Lots of options out there. I am surprised Skype is still around with all the options out there. Microsoft just bought it to kill it.
