Bad news.
This says early circulation of dengue in the central region of Argentina, particularly in Córdoba, with concerns about a new strain. The Ministry of Health confirmed local cases of dengue, which is unusual for this time of year. Two young women were diagnosed on October 15, and there is also one imported case of the DEN-4 serotype.
This early detection suggests that the virus, transmitted by the
Aedes aegypti mosquito, is circulating a month earlier than during last year's unprecedented epidemic. In Buenos Aires, only one imported case has been confirmed, while two have been reported in the province. As of October 5, 2024, Argentina reported over 756,000 cases, with 188,024 confirmed by laboratory tests.
The outbreak has severely impacted the central and northern provinces. Additionally, a new serotype has emerged in Argentina, introduced by a tourist returning from Cuba, where there is a significant dengue outbreak. This serotype had not been seen since 2019 and disappeared in 2022.
The presence of this new strain adds uncertainty to the health scenario because the effectiveness of the Qdenga vaccine against DEN-3 and DEN-4 remains under study. The National Meteorological Service forecasts increased temperatures and rainfall, which could facilitate mosquito proliferation.
Confirmaron la existencia de dengue autóctono en la zona centro. Por otro lado, se detectó una variante que no había sido registrada en la epidemia récord de 2023-24.
