Expat Life: Local Discoveries, Global Connections

My life dream is to live in Palermo Hollywood

Palermo Soho or Hollywood is ok to visit on vacation for a week or two but Recoleta is a better choice for many to live. A good idea is to rent apartments in different neighborhoods to see how each is living.
Agree with this. Soho WAS fun to stay in but it is crazy touristy. I was staying right in the heart of Soho and tourists everywhere. I moved over to Recoleta and liked it. Stayed on Libertad and Posadas and was perfect. I also stayed in another apartment near French and Larrea and also was the perfect area. More laid back and residential. Not as many tourists. Everything I needed was within a few blocks. That seemed like a great area.

In Palermo, I also stayed a few blocks from the Alto Palermo shopping mall and loved that area too. It is more residential in those areas.

Buenos Aires is an easy city to fall in love with. I remember my first trip and I also fell in love with the city. I extended my trip and told myself I had to create a business so I could live in Buenos Aires and did just that. I really love Buenos Aires.

Palermo Hollywood is great and I own an apartment there but I'm a Recoleta guy through and through. I lived on Avenida Alvear just a few buildings down from the Alvear Palace hotel. Really loved the area. I owned several apartments in Recoleta and all did great with rentals. These days, Palermo Hollywood is requested more than Recoleta but for everyday living, I would move to Recoleta again in a heart beat.

I'll move back to Buenos Aires in a few years once my kids are done with school and will live in Recoleta again. Soho is way too touristy. But it can be great for a week or so. I love how everything is very central in Recoleta. Anything I need I can find it within a few blocks. Great restaurants and very safe and more residential and cleaner. Vandalism is rare and most buildings have doormen that hose off the sidewalks every night.

I don't think you can go wrong in either Palermo or Recoleta but everyday living is different than just a week or two on vacation.

Are general expenses (restaurants, cafes and groceries) more expensive in Recoleta or less expensive than in Palermo?
I think everything is overpriced in Palermo Hollywood and Soho. I'm not sure why this is the case other than just more tourists. There are a lot of tourists in San Telmo too but it seems like they have a different crowd there with more of budget travelers and I don't find the prices as much.

I don't get the appeal of Soho other than you are close to tons of bars and restaurants and stuff. Living day in and out that would get old to me.

Colegiales and further out is nice but I'm starting to see more and more tourists here too. I guess gentrification will keep spreading. I really like near Palermo Chico with all the Embassies but not too many Airbnbs over there compared to other areas. I'm not sure if buildings restrict them more? It is very clean and feels safer.

Recoleta also would be great. I rented an apartment over near Plaza Libertad and it was great. I also rented an Airbnb on French street near Alto Palermo mall and loved it. It was very quiet. It was a PH unit so it was just dark but had a nice rooftop.

I've seen a few units in the Distrito Quartier complex. Right across the street from the bus and train stations, and the cruise port (My family are great cruisers and already making plans to come down and take a cruise from there).
I'm not a big night life guy, and if I do want to hit the clubs, they are not far on the Subte. lol
I also like to shop for my dinner every day (this is what life comes down to when you are retired). And since I have all day, I can get to the markets on public transportation. Or Uber if I'm loading up on staples.

I didn't even know there was anything in that area. I can't imagine that area would be too popular. Not sure I'd want to be by the train station. That's kind of a grimy area but just looked on Google Maps and that building looks nice. But some of the reviews made me laugh! Especially the one where the guy was robbed by a security guard but then says the problem was resolved! 🤣

I didn't even know there was anything there. I heard by the bus station it gets shady at night and not an area to hang around. Why do you like that area @daveholman? Have you been there? Or is it only the building you like?

That developer I think has other high end buildings. I remember reading that they are going to put up a new tower in Palermo Hollywood.

I have not been there...the last time I was in BsAs it wasn't built yet.

Wasn't the part of Retiro I thought you were going to mention. Locals don't really hang out in this area. I believe that is a new building that is mostly Airbnb's. Not sure if you were living there full time you would want to only be around tourists. I am not sure how many locals live in this building. I haven't been here at all but heard from a few people that were renting Airbnb's in that building but they had many issues.

Looking closer, I just realized it is literally across the street from Villa 31. I might have to reconsider. lol
Yes! That is not an area I would recommend living. I'm sure they have security guards but I would guess the views wouldn't even be good from several units as there are a lot of cargo ships in that area. I laughed about the security guard stealing and breaking in! I was going to say if Villa 31 doesn't get you then the security guards will!

Avoid! Sketchy area. I have a few friends that got mugged just at the bus station around there. Not a desirable area at all. If you go to Retiro around Arroyo is ideal. I don't care how the building is I would not want to be in that area.

🤣 Yes here is the view from the building.

Yes that is a terrible area. I wouldn't live there if you paid me. I know someone that stayed in that building and they said there was no hot water for several days. I think there are several short term rentals in that building and tourists booking it not knowing any better.
