Economy New York Times - Paul Krugman: Why dollarization is a fantasy

Never say never. I laugh at all the Massa fanboys who kept saying NO WAY Javier Milei could ever get elected. I laugh at all of them now. And they want to complain so badly about Milei but they can't as he has moderated his approach. It totally shuts their mouths. I'm not sure if Dollarisation can happen or not in the future. In the short run no but I wouldn't count anything out. So far he is doing great.

I agree. I was one of the very few that said it would be a blow out! I was only off by 2% https://x.com/BuySellBA/status/1726267821683036602?s=20

I believe in the first PASO election there was massive fraud and abuse. So really Milei was well on his way a while ago. Dollarization I look at a gradual process. Milei is acting very quickly and deliberately. He isn't sugarcoating things. He is telling it like it is.

Paul Krugman is a highly respected American economist. I've been reading his columns for many years, and he's been consistently right. In fact, he was one of the few to predict the subprime mortgage crisis that ravaged world economies in 2007-2010.
Yes, he was one of the ones that predicted the subprime mortgage mess but I believe after our CEO foreshadowed ALL of the mess in the USA before him and everyone else.

Read here on this thread as our CEO mentioned what would happen, why it would happen and when it would happen.

by who? CNN and Fox News and CBC? Krugman is a mainstream media puppet that believes in Keynesianism and supports all the Woke stuff and all the wars :p

1. Krugman's "remarks dealt another blow to the 'transitory' inflation narrative that Krugman has vocally defended in the past and, in his recent posts on Twitter, made clear he has not abandoned." https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/p...t-inflation-wrong-stands-transitory-narrative

2. "Just over a decade ago, Keynes devotee, Paul Krugman, took the logic of Keynesian economics and ran with it to the outer limits of deep space. In the process, he lost his mind. Following his righteous departure from planet earth, Krugman went on cable television and explained that the proper way to propel an economic growth chart up and to the right is to borrow massive amounts of money and spend it preparing for an alien invasion. Only a Nobel Prize winning economist could come up with such nonsense." https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/paying-price-krugmans-terrible-mistake

3. "as John Sexton writes at Hot Air, 'Krugman spends the entire column explaining how the people who were right...were right for the wrong reasons.' What's more, Krugman completely ignores the people who were right for the right reasons. In Krugman's world, Austrian economists and adherents didn't even participate in the discourse" https://www.zerohedge.com/economics...-inflation?commentId=62dd6262f043bc001ce8e38a

4. "Krugman insists that taming the 'federal debt should be well down the list' of government 'priorities' after 'climate change' and 'child poverty' because debt projections have become 'much less dire' over the past decade or so. In reality, the debt is far higher than projected, and Krugman’s own words prove it. In 2009, when the Democrat-controlled Congress and President Obama began racking up debt and projecting $9 trillion in deficits over the coming decade, Krugman wrote that 'even if we do run these deficits,' federal debt would be 90% of GDP in 2019, or 'substantially less than it was at the end of World War II.' The debt in 2019 turned out to be 109% of GDP, which is 21% higher than Krugman projected and just 8% below the debt from World War II." https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/krugmans-accounting-national-debt-jailworthy

5. Krugman "criticized Bitcoin for being deflationary, adding that there is an 'incentive to hoard the virtual currency rather than spend it.' But while this has proved largely true, Krugman's claims have been undermined by Bitcoin's continued utility as a currency, BTC's rise to $25,000 demonstrating its potential as a means of transferring value across borders with relative ease. Bitcoin has even been adopted as a currency in El Salvador, where it serves alongside the U.S. dollar as a form of legal tender, in wide use by small merchants. Further, Bitcoin, 15 years on, retains a niche in online commerce. All this in mind, in retrospect, Krugman's dismissal of Bitcoin at $7 serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of financial markets and the potential for revolutionary technologies to reshape the world." https://www.zerohedge.com/crypto/bitcoin-365999-krugman-dismissed-it-7-exactly-12-years-ago

6. "Nevertheless, after the August CPI data came out, Paul Krugman loudly declared the inflation war was over and the Fed won. 'According to Paul Krugman, the economy is great, and we’ve won the war on inflation, and there’s no recession. I mean, how wrong can one guy be?'" https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/peter-schiff-inflation-war-over-inflation-won

7. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even likes Krugman: "AOC is representative of an entire movement of prominent economists and PhD ‘experts’ who similarly believe that deficits and debts are irrelevant. Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman has said in the past that the US national debt is simply 'money we owe to ourselves' therefore no one should really worry too much about it. (Coincidentally, Krugman wrote those words in February 2015 when the national debt was ‘only’ $18 trillion. Today it’s almost twice that level.) Well, Krugman is completely wrong, and the facts are clear." https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2023-10-23/six-predictions-last-weeks-horrific-treasury-report

You just sound like a bitcoin fanboi that complains about paying $1 US cubierto charges. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seems like a smart, strong woman standing up to old men that think they are powerful. If she likes him, he sounds OK to me!

THANK YOU! Thank you for taking the time to post all of that. Great minds think alike! He was totally wrong about Bitcoin.

While I respect the rights of people to post they like him, I respect more the rights of those of us that hate the guy to post about it!

the rights of people to post they like him
sure, and most of us just assume that people who are 'leaders' in a field are "experts" - i really never mistrusted things on a grand scale until COVID lockdowns. i learned in EMT school that wearing an N95 mask too long was harmful...that suddenly went away!
i learned as a kid that vaccines need decades of testing and trials...Trump said WarpSpeed made that irrelevant, and then the same people like Kamala Harris who said they'd never take a 'Trump vaccine' ended up being shills for Pfizer et. al

in the end, we're starting to learn that "Experts" just mean paid propagandists. and Krugman is a CNN/Fox favorite because he will parrot whatever line he gets paid to parrot. when i was a cop, leaders suggested that we might need to shut-down backyard churches that violated the 20-person emergency order from the Governor...that ended up being fake news, too, and the reason i'm not a cop anymore. people said Bitcoin was going to allow drug-trafficking and all that evil stuff, yet the US Dollar does that just fine already :p

@Che Vos I think this is enough of you talking like this about the cubierto. Many people don't like paying these including me. It sounds like the OP is new and doesn't know you can tell the restaurant you don't want it and don't have to pay. We were all new to BA at one point. I enjoy some of your posts but enough about this, please.

I'm not a fan of AOC but to each their own.

doesn't know you can tell the restaurant you don't want it and don't have to pay
i mute anyone who is aggressively on one side or the other, without nuance, so i didn't actually see the post. Che Vos is funny because i was one of the first to offer to pitch-in to their birthday meal, and i've been providing real-time info for other Expats like me (been here just under 3 weeks now in BsAs) but everything from a couple of the Peronists here is just negative, negative, negative...with no solutions offered. it's easy to tear-down, but hard to create value. unfortunately, these people won't listen to the content from Thomas Sowell and Jordan Peterson that so inspired me years ago, and they will continue to spiral in resentment (which is the heart of Marxism). there's no point in a conversation with a tribal member; all nuance is weakness to them, and when your worldview is that i'm some sort of Oppressor and they are a powerless 'worker' on the Side of the Angels, there can be no honesty or relationship.

regarding Cubierto, i posted the law in this rant: https://www.expatsba.com/threads/don-julio-or-la-cabrera.291/#post-1484

...but basically in CABA, the law clearly states it is legal, but it must be informed consent...that's my entire argument; i'm okay with paying 1400 Pesos at a nice restaurant for a "Cubierto" as long as it's posted where i see it (at the top of the menu would be preferable, otherwise it seems shady and disrespectful). i want only just not to feel like i'm being scammed, and it was one of the reasons i hated Guatemala - if you don't look like the locals, they will charge you extra and you're constantly on-edge about making sure you haggle, verify prices, and make sure you aren't Gringo-taxed. it's exhausting, and feels bad.

i want to pay for a good service, and i want to return to continue paying, but one bad experience of feeling taken advantage of will make me never be a customer again. i don't think i'm alone :) the Cubierto is illegal in some provinces like Mendoza, but in CABA you can charge it if it's consensual and there are:

250mL drinking water
gluten-free bread
sodium-free salt
no charging <12 years old

"en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires existe una ley que permite el cobro, sólo si se trata de mayores de 12 años de edad, y únicamente en el caso de que se den ciertos servicios (agua, panera apta para celíacos, sal sin sodio, pan tradicional o dietético) -Ley Nº 4407/12-.
Instead, in the Buenos Aires City there is a law that allows collection, only if they are over 12 years of age, and only in the event that certain services are provided (water, bread basket suitable for celiacs, sodium-free salt, traditional or dietary bread) -Law No. 4407/12-."

it's all about consent and respect. but at no place that has tried to charge me Cubierto have i received drinking water. i asked Buenos Aires Grill on the Corrientes strip about the law, and the server just said "welp, we just don't offer water with the cubierto charge" and he shrugged it off, ahahahha. could i show the law and argue, and ask for the police, etc.? sure, but i don't look like a local, and i have a Mexican accent, and i'd rather just 'vote with my dollar' by leaving a negative Google review and never coming back.

the funny thing is about the commies: i pay Cubierto every week; CheVos thinks they can read minds and know the inner workings of other people's thoughts - it's all projection, and i'm not that interested. it's also weird that people who (to me) sound like they are MERCOSUR locals, and not Expats investing or looking to move to Buenos Aires for political or economic or personal reasons, are posting on this forum so much.

I do the same thing @StatusNomadicus but recently stopped ignoring people just so I can read their stupidity. Sometimes it's funny. I think some people have a lot of anger here. I don't fault them with the really crappy economy. I think we should give them a break.

I met up with some local girls and to them they think all of us tourists are just loaded with money. I made the mistake of paying for a dinner one time for a group of my amigovia's friends. Now when we go out everyone expects me to pay the bill! They view me as the rich foreigner. It took 2 times before I had to say that was a 1 or 2 time thing. And asked if we were going to split the bill!

I did see you offer to chip it to pay @Che Vos's bill. She probably didn't see it. I know from reading the old forum there are a lot of diversity of people that read the forums. I talked to @earlyretirement on the phone for 2.5 hours during my consultation. He was generous with his time but I think I understand the guy. He simply loves Argentina. He likes sharing information and wants to see a better Argentina. NO ONE posts on a forum for 13 years for no reason unless they are passionate about something.

I agree Peronists are just negative. No matter how great Milei does, their argument will be, "Massa would have done it better, or quicker" or some other total BS.

@StatusNomadicus ok I'm sorry. I didn't see that you were one of the ones who offered to give me money. I neither asked for this generosity or expected it. I do appreciate it and I do appreciate your kind thoughts. I went back to read the post and indeed I see that you were one that offered and I want to say thanks to you.

I'm not communist and resent that you imply that I am. I just find it frustrating that you all with money in US Dollars are complaining about cost of living now in my country. I read @Larry's post about lies about how it costs as much as the USA. That not true.

Yes i admit i get frustrated from time to time. I find this forum on Twitter. I think its interesting. My friends still cant believe I'm going to Osaka this weekend for my birthday and my boyfriends birthday. Thank you for offering to pay my meal. That is kind of you.

I have some issues. That's true. But I think so do many people. I try to improve daily during this difficult time with my country.

I'm getting frustrated as it's already getting more expensive!
i've been covering the cost of using a US credit card the past few days...what are you seeing is getting more expensive? i see tons of 700 USD monthly airbnbs all over, i paid $4 USD yesterday for blueberries/strawberries/bananas, and the gym pass i just got quoted was 19000 Pesos/month (~$20 USD?) for a credit card and no commitment.

i'm not seeing any price changes in the past 3 weeks. curious what specific items/services you mean, so i can do some research
