I do. It's been a few years since I used it. I'm doing DuoLingo right now to brush up, and will be finding a class or exchange as soon as I get there, to get the hang of CastellanoVery true! Do you speak Spanish @daveholman ? It was my motivation to learn Spanish and Portuguese. Now I have most of the world covered with English, Spanish and Portuguese. The #1 reason for men to learn a second language. The language of love.
We are spoiled by the prevalence of English in the world. As I travel across the globe, I've always tried to learn at least a few phrases in the local language. I even have about 100 words of Arabic and 50 of Mandarin. I can say "thank you" in probably 30 languages. Even if the accent is horrible, most people respond positively to even a bad attempt to speak their language.Probably very true. I was in Colombia last year and I was surprised at how many Americans there don't speak any Spanish. You would think men would be more motivated to learn but men in general are very lazy. Especially Americans.
Very true.Women are the reasons why most men do most things 🙂
This is a good idea. I do the same thing when I travel to try to learn the basics which goes a long way. Now with technology it is very easy to travel. We are spoiled by the prevalence of English in the world. And it drives me absolutely bonkers to read a travel review or watch a YouTube video and Americans are complaining the locals don't speak English, or that signs are not in English.
That's true a lot of places unless you stick to the tourist centers. Which are generally crowded, overpriced and not authentic. This is a good idea. I do the same thing when I travel to try to learn the basics which goes a long way. Now with technology it is very easy to travel.
I hate it when Americans expect everyone to speak English. In Argentina not many people speak English.
Tourist centers tend to be centralized and close to popular attractions, but I agree about getting off the beaten path if even just a little. A lot of times you don't even have to go too far - instead of finding a restaurant on the main, crowded, arterial roads take a turn into one of the small alley ways where you have to walk or bike or travel how the locals do to arrive as opposed to a tour bus or Uber. You can communicate a ton with just a few local words or phrases and miming out the rest. Otherwise mind as well be in little Italy, or little China, or little Hungary, or little where ever from somewhere closer to home. That's true a lot of places unless you stick to the tourist centers. I like to go off the beaten path a little. Especially food-wise. I like to find the little hole in the wall restaurants the locals go to. Where, if you throw out a little badly pronounced Romanian or Japanese or whatever, someone who has a similarly bad smattering of English will speak up. Then you combine your words and a little sign language and have a great time!
Agree we are lucky as Americans that many people around the world consider English to be the universal language. Many here in Spain speak English. Probably the same is true for Spanish guys learning English from easy American girls. I see American expat girls hooking up left and right with these Spanish guys that can speak English. I shake my head at some of them that are just wasted and drunk. These Spanish guys must think hooking up with easy Americans like shooting fish in a barrel! We are spoiled by the prevalence of English in the world. I often see American female and male tourists that make fools out of themselves. I was recently in Medellin visiting a friend and I saw drunk or maybe high male tourists. It is no wonder they are getting drugged and robbed.Agree we are lucky as Americans that many people around the world consider English to be the universal language. Many here in Spain speak English. Saw a guy on Twitter the other day, said he got drugged the very day he flew in to Medellin. Said he was innocently sitting at the bar having a drink and woke up in his hotel room minus his cash and electronics. I am not big on victim blaming, but I wondered how his assailant knew which room to take him to. LOLI often see American female and male tourists that make fools out of themselves. True! While I understand the typical meaning and imagery that statement is supposed to represent, it reminded me of the phrase 'like throwing a hotdog into a hallway' instead.
Men are also the reason why 'most women do most things.' Perhaps more importantly, some would argue that men are also the reason women can't do many things. However, to be fair, women are also the reason men can't do certain things.
It's wasn't very common in Buenos Aires to get drugged but my interior designer told me her husband that manages many Airbnb's said that 3 Americans in 3 different properties got drugged in Palermo by girls they picked up in clubs so be careful.Saw a guy on Twitter the other day, said he got drugged the very day he flew in to Medellin. Wow! If that is just 3 random Americans then it must be happening quite a bit. It's wasn't very common in Buenos Aires to get drugged but my interior designer told me her husband that manages many Airbnb's said that 3 Americans in 3 different properties got drugged in Palermo by girls they picked up in clubs so be careful.
I learned many years ago that there's no sex in the Champagne Room. lolJust don't be dumb. Read this and laughed. Anytime a sexy bikini model says she wants to meet you it probably isn't what it seems!
