Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

Has everyone forgotten that the US has a trade surplus with Argentina?!
Has everyone forgotten that Trump values loyalty more than anything?
Has everyone forgotten that Musk also likes Milei?
Musk and Trump are not going to screw Milei over, but mainly because it will be in Musk and Trump's interest to make a deal with Argentina both for national and business reasons in the future.
Everything will be ok in the end.

Let's see. Milei is a dolt. Look at this crypto scam he was just involved with. He is a moron and people are finally figuring it out.

Forget about Milei. He is done.

I think you may be right @Avocado. His biggest problem is he thinks he can do the same things as the crazy Orange man from the USA. He mentally thinks that his power is equal to Trump and he can do whatever he wants. This will end up costing his legacy. All for money.

Anything's possible but I doubt it. Most leaders face calls to resign at some point, not just Presidents but leaders of companies, sports leagues, unions, you name it. If Milei can't survive this then he's a lot weaker than I thought. I don't have all the facts here but on the surface it seems pretty minor.
He might have been able to survive it if he just made some apology and said it was a simple mistake and fired someone connected to him to take fall. But all his lies keep adding up and probably that will make things worse. In your country isn't this how Richard Nixon get forced out of office?

Now they are saying this thief paid Karina Milei and controlled Milei.

In Argentina, you never know. Argentina has more tolerance for scams and to cheat people. Look at CFK and how much she stole and how they people still kept electing her to office. I always laugh at that and proof positive that locals know their politicians are corrupt and keep them in office as long as it means good times for them.

I agree with you Larry. This probably wouldn't have been as big of a deal if he just fired someone over it. Seems like more and more evidence is coming out and that is probably why they can't blame someone else. It seems like his sister probably set all of this up. The lying is probably going to end up causing problems for him.

I think you're comparing apples and elephants

The fact that Trump is still meeting with Milei speaks volumes. Trump has had his own brush with his own memecoin. Admittedly different than what Milei did. But he is still hosting Milei here soon and he wouldn't be doing that if he thought things will implode so quickly. You never know in Argentina what might happen in an election year as powerful forces are at play.

It would be much easier if there was someone to blame but I don't think that will be the case.

The people that supported Milei still do. It will take more than this to get people to turn on him. Those that I talk to say they know that his sister probably asked him to post exactly what he posted. She was probably paid to get access to her brother but most don't think he questioned his sister. People are so accustomed to fraud here that this doesn't seem like anything major.

I agree with you @CraigM this should blow over.

Interesting, I figured as much but it's good to hear from someone local. These things always seem so big in the moment and then a year later it's a distant memory. The Sackler family (Oxycontin) was said to be responsible for more American deaths than all wars combined, and amassed a fortune north of $10 billion in the process. They were non-stop news for months but mention their name today and most people can't connect the dots.

That is a great example Craig. I'm a nurse so I remember hearing every day about the Sackler family. They did have to pay fines and penalties in almost each state. It seemed to be all about the money. Once they paid up you didn't hear much about them again.

His approval ratings in pools are even higher than before the scandal. Daily in the news they talk about the IMF money that is close to coming. As long as the economy doesn't get derailed or anything change on that end, all systems go. The old phrase, 'it's the economy stupid' applies to Argentina. As long as people feel like the economy is ok they will give him a pass.

Argentina has a lot of corruption. A part of life here which makes people more willing to put up with it. In Milei's case many were surprised by what he did but the thought of the Peronist coming back to power is too scary to think about for many.

No doubt Wally. I suspect the one downside for Milei longer term is that his stature outside Argentina took a hit. Before this he was viewed as a hero crusader rooting out bureaucracy and corruption, now he's one of them.

That is exactly correct Craig. I've been doing business in Argentina for 23 years now. I've pretty much seen it all. I am not naive to think that Milei or his sister wouldn't be involved in anything corrupt. I think it's safe to say ALL politicians in Argentina probably are. I was disappointed that he would be so stupid to be blatant about it.

Now any outsider that knows anything about what he did will know he is just another member of the caste. Granted much better than the past corrupt leaders we have had but crushed a lot of people's hopes that he would be more intelligent. He has still done a lot of good things and will continue to. Just a needless self-inflicted distraction he didn't need in an election year.

Most people in Argentina know that all politicians are corrupt. So for many people it is probably not an issue for them. They understand their leaders are corrupt and stealing from them. Milei in this case probably doesn't look at it as stealing from Argentina but just getting paid to get access and post. It is mostly outsiders that are surprised because they don't understand Argentine politics or society and know that corruption is everywhere here.

Thousands of people lost money in the scam that Milei pushed out but locals probably look at it as them not getting stolen from which is a huge improvement to them.

My friends outside of Argentina joke with me this is the problem with Argentina that so many allow corruption at all levels of the government and no hope for a true turnaround which could be correct.

Great points @TonyTigre. Hell Trump and Musk are using Milei's game book in the USA. Trump also had a memecoin rug pull too. Not the same thing as Milei but still.

This photo shows you where Milei stands literally and figuratively with Musk and the Republican Party that won the latest election in the USA... (Screenshot taken from coverage of the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC))
