Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

Good article today mentioning the obvious that USA isn't always able to save Argentina. Even if they get more IMF money could blow through it all if they aren't careful. Seems like the same cycles and same things happen. China has a better chance to help Argentina than the USA does.

And if Trump actually goes through with the tariffs it will sink Argentina.

Well according to Trump he doesn't need Latin America. They need the USA. 😵

A manifestly true and obvious statement. And, at a guess, Argentina won't be subjected to tariffs - the US runs a trade surplus with Argentina.

I am always amazed at the staying power of the USA as a global power. Talk of it's constant demise are always wrong. Lots of staying power.
Trump says things out loud that he should keep to himself. We are fortunate to have the world's reserve currency. We are printing so much money it is scary. We are a debtor nation. I do think one day things won't be so great. We do need Latin America. USA wouldn't last without the cheap labor pool from Mexico and other Latin American countries.

But it's not an accident we have the world's reserve currency.

Is anyone else concerned that Milei seems to be aligned too much with the USA even if it won't benefit Argentina? Or maybe Argentina's relationship to China will somehow tip to a negative point just because Milei is trying to mirror everything Trump is doing.

True and it will be the world's reserve currency for a long time. I can't see any replacement in the cards any time soon.

In Milei's eyes he has everything to gain and very little to lose becoming aligned with the USA and Trump. I believe a good relationship with the USA and China can co-exist.

I'm actually very surprised to hear that Argentina exports steel to the USA. That is surprising.

Not much but they do. Tariffs on steel imports aren't anything new. In 2018 the US imposed 25% on steel imports but Argentina negotiated a quota system instead of tariffs so they can export a certain amount without the extra %.

Most of Argentina's steel production is used domestically or neighboring countries. Ternium Argentina and Acindar owned by Arcelor Mittal are the main players.

Yep and Acindar announced some layoffs. They were already hurting but the 25% tariff made a tough situation worse for that industry in Argentina.

Acindar, a steel company controlled by the ArcelorMittal Group, has agreed with the Metalworkers Union (UOM) on a staggered worker suspension scheme to avoid massive layoffs.

The measure will initially affect about 200 employees next week and could extend to a total of 970 workers by the end of the year.

This decision is due to a significant decline in steel production and demand, which has been exacerbated by the 25% tariffs imposed by the United States on steel and aluminum imports.

Suspended workers will receive a reduced salary: 80% of their salary in February, 78% in March, and 75% from April to December 2025.

Additionally, Acindar has implemented a voluntary retirement plan that has received 200 applications and plans to eliminate another 200 indirect positions through the renegotiation of agreements with contracting companies.

It will be interesting to see if Milei is able to get Trump to change his mind before they go into effect.

I think Milei is finding out the Bromance is over.
