Argentina: Inflation Resumes Its Decline, But . . .

A very good article about inflation in the NYT today. His approval rating is 56% making him one of the most popular president in Argentina's history.

It is behind a paywall. Anyone have archived version?

Here is one: Archived Version

Good article. It's very very difficult to do what Milei. has done. K's and Alberto devasted Argentina. Hopefully 2025 is the year.
Don't forget Macri and Caputo. They also put Argentina in this mess it is in too. You can't just blame Kirchners. Nelson did more for Argentina than anyone gives him credit for. I think Macri is as much to blame taking on all that IMF debt and it looks like Milei will do the same thing.

Definitely seems to be a tone shift, at least here in the US and with regards to MSM.

Do you mean changing good or bad @FuturoBA? Most of the stuff I have read about him in the MSM outside of Argentina is all pretty good. People seem to love him outside of Argentina. Here it's a mixed bag. Even amongst my girlfriend's family her parents like him but some of her family does not as they are feeling the pinch.

Seems like more companies are getting more confident. I read about JP Morgan going to start hiring more employees in BA. Lots of banks love Milei and country risk keeps going down.

Definitely good. On X/twitter and some other platforms I agree, many are rooting for him, but there were also many that tried to use the rhetoric of linking him to Trump and the article itself mentions how many were mocking him.

Take a look at this

I think overall all the international media loves him. Milei is very recognizable all around the world which is remarkable. Most people never knew who the President was in Argentina. He changed things and putting Argentina on the map.

On X most people except for some die hard Cristina fans mostly love him.

Inflation still heading down.

Wholesale inflation was 1.4% in November in Argentina: imported products registered deflation for the third consecutive month, according to INDEC.

This increase represents a slight rise compared to the previous month when the Wholesale Internal Price Index (IPIM) had registered an increase of 1.2%.

A notable aspect of the report is that imported products experienced deflation for the third consecutive month. This trend is mainly attributed to the reduction of the PAIS Tax, which has generated a decrease in the prices of articles from abroad.

Regulated prices, especially public service tariffs, continue to exert upward pressure.

The economic recession and stability in the foreign exchange market have contributed to moderating inflation.

Although wholesale inflation shows signs of deceleration, the annual accumulation remains significant. In the first 11 months of 2024, the IPIM has accumulated an increase of over 60%.

This moderation in wholesale inflation could have a positive impact on consumer prices in the coming months, although analysts warn that other factors, such as adjustments in tariffs and the behavior of the exchange rate, will continue to be determinant in the evolution of prices.

Wow I was going to say beef seemed like it went up a lot last month and these numbers confirm it. Your numbers said 7.6% last month? Wow. So much for inflation slowing down.
That is the government's version of inflation going down. Almost 8% in one month increase in beef prices! Look at the other categories.

Public services: Water rates increased by 330.1%, electricity by 357.8%, and gas by 548.6% during 2024.

Transportation: Railway fares increased by 844.7% and road transportation by 328.3% over the year.

I am sorry but from the outside looking in this doesn't seem like things are going too well. It seems like everyone is cutting Milei too much slack. Sure he inherited a mess but how much rope will they give him?

Come on. beef prices going up almost 8% in a month. That kind of inflation is what most countries have in 2 years. Increases jumping up that much. That is crazy. I saw that X post and it says restaurants went up 5.2% in December. So prices are still going up. My friends are moving out of BA and say prices are crazy. How are locals dealing with this???

It is a travesty what this government has done to the poor and middle class. Public transportation needs to be looked at more than making money. Governments have an obligation to allow people to get to and from their work.

Something has to give. Prices are going up beyond salary increases and anyone that says salaries are matching inflation are lying. Yes this means the government is lying.

You are right. Did you come to Argentina yet? You sound like you understand things. Sometimes it takes an outsider to call how things are. In what world is beef going up 8% in one month normal? All the time restaurants keep raising prices. Things will crash or the peso will devalue and inflation will go back up. This not possible to continue.

Serious question - How do you get from governments having an obligation to "allow people to get to and from work" to government should *pay* for people to get to and from work?

You are aware that the government only has other people's money, right? That every dime government spends, it took from someone by coercion?

The only way you can get something without paying is for someone else to pay and get nothing.

Is that really moral in your book?

I get both sides of the argument, each has its point. It's true that public transportation should be accessible, especially for people to get to and from work without too much hassle. But then there's the issue of how the government funds these things, which ultimately comes from the taxes we all pay. Maybe the key is finding a middle ground, making transportation more accessible without overloading those who contribute with their taxes. It's about striking a balance between people’s needs and the available resources.

The challenge is how to maintain those subsidies without putting too much strain on public finances, while also ensuring that the transportation system remains functional and accessible to those who need it most, especially in such an unstable economic context. So, while the idea of balance sounds good, it's a tough issue to address without a deep change in the country’s economic policies. It’s a difficult situation...
