How can the food here be so bad ?

Despite all the opinions about the poor quality of the food here, National Geographic rated it as one of the world's top culinary destinations this year.

Argentina has some amazing restaurants. Great to see Argentina getting ranked so high on National Geographic's list.

De nada. I think I remember a post where you mentioned a drinking issue? Or maybe I am confusing that with someone else. My brother was an alcoholic for over a decade. It wasn't until he got some help that he kicked the wagon. It is never too late to get help.

A drinking issue would be un understatement I drink until unconsciousness most nights but it's my fault I am not asking for assistance. I have had ass

It is an illness. A disease and that is how you have to look at it @MickMolloy. My brother was the same way. Very bad. You have to take the first step and want to get help. If you don't then no one can help you. With my brother it took many years and a combination of various things including inpatient treatment, therapy and going off the wagon many times.

He used to live with me and it got really bad. Finally I had to kick him out of my place once I moved to BA. He has kicked the habit. You really have to try to want to stop.

That looks incredible @Jakoval!

I don't think the food is awful here but it depends where you are going. Where do you typically go to eat @MickMolloy? Are you cooking at home or dining out? There are a lot of good restaurants here so you can't be hitting all bad places. But the decent ones are not the cheapest. To give me an idea, what is your favorite meals here? What are your favorite restaurants?
How about this one? Water spinach has arrived and I suppose it's still early in the season that's why it's quite expensive. Last year early in the season cost around 2,000ish pesos and later on 1,400-1,600 pesos. This year I found one bunch cost around 6,000 a few weeks ago but now down to 4,800 pesos per bunch. Still kinda expensive but I had been wanting to eat it for a year now so I couldn't help myself.

Great to see food prices stabilizing and actually going down in some cases. That looks delicious. Where do you buy water spinach here? I assume one of the markets in Chinatown?

I am going to miss Buenos Aires but one of the things I am looking forward to is the very fresh fruits and vegetables in the US supermarkets and the wide variety of basically anything. That isn't as easy to find here where things are very seasonal.

Yum. Looks good. I was in BA last year and went to Chinatown and was not impressed with the restaurants there. Maybe I didn't go to the right ones. You look like you are a very good cook @Jakoval.

Yes, only barrio chino has Asian vegetables like Chinese broccoli (chelan), water spinach, snap peas, etc. I also miss supermarkets in the US especially Costco :ROFLMAO:

I love Argentina but how? Something as simple as a sandwhich de milenesa will be so dry and awful every bite is a choking hazard. Buy a simple "Milenesa con pure" and its so thin it almost doesn't exist. And this restaurant is rated 4.5 stars in google maps so Argentines actually think this is good like they all have Stockholm syndrome.

Argentina has the worst food on planet Earth, and I love this country
I am surprised to hear people speaking so negatively about the food in BA. I went last year and had amazing meal after amazing meal. Every place we went to was very good. I found a difficult time finding very good seafood but other than that we could find high end delicious food there. I am not sure about day in and day out. We did not cook any meals and dined out but I was impressed with the restaurants we went to.

Some of them I did not think were great deals. Some places seemed as expensive as I would pay in the US. We went to Don Julio and spent quite a bit of money. Other places were more reasonable. Maybe 1/2 of what we would pay for a comparable place in the US.

does anybody know a decent hotdog brand?
I couldn't find a good hot dog. We ate chorizos which were very good. Our son loved Chori in Palermo Soho but he was dying to eat just a plain hot dog. We actually went to the supermarket to look but all we saw where pale colored hotdogs that I am not sure what they were made out of. In the States we buy beef hot dogs. The hotel was kind enough to offer to cook some for us but the supermarket hot dogs looked bad.

I'm not sure on brands but try one of the speciality deli's which sometimes has good quality.

Another in Palermo is:

Valenti also has very good quality cold cuts and should have specialty hot dogs.

Give you one more ;)
You should open a restaurant! Your photos look much better than any of the restaurants I have been to in BA.

Valenti is a very high end store. They have several locations. If they don't have the product, they will tell you who does have it.

Local hot dogs are not good in the store. I gave up trying to find it in the store. There are a few hot dog restaurants but they are expensive now. There was one called Dogg that had pretty good Chicago style hotdogs but they all went out of business. I don't think locals like it as much as chorizo. It's getting harder and harder for restaurants now.

Try Pancho Gourmet. They are pretty good here.
