I'm on my way!

I have to say, given the number of dogs I see, the amount of poop on the streets is minimal. lol
Maybe it varies by neighborhood, but most of the people around here carry bags and pick up after their dogs
Very good to hear it is improving. Terrible and ashamed that the problem is still here after all the years.

This is how I see it too each time I go into Soho. It is a cute area but I don't think I could live in that neighborhood with tourists everywhere. The times I go there on the weekend I see poop everywhere. In the street, on the sidewalks. It is one thing that I wish the city would make progress with. I do see people with bags in their hands now which is a huge improvement over the years but many people just don't care.

Recoleta people have more respect and it is an older population that has some respect. Our doorman hoses down the sidewalk every night and if need be in the morning too.
Recoleta is my dream neighborhood. Always clean. Almost no vandalism. People have more respect in those area.

Wow! That is great news. My girlfriends were staying in Soho most of their trip and also Hollywood and they said it is the worst in Soho. They would send me photos almost every day of it. (They know I have a phobia of poop - dog or otherwise). I started to wonder if it was true or not but I could see the locations. I'm happy to hear most people carrying around bags. Good to get that newbie intel from you @daveholman!

Anything else you are surprised good or bad about since moving there?
Interesting, when I stayed in SoHo last August there was poop on every block almost. Recoleta had very little but I saw fewer dogs there too.
This matches the photos that my friends send me. It looks like around Plaza Serrano it is especially bad. But my friends stayed in Recoleta and said there are a lot of dogs there. They said there were more there than anywhere else they stayed. They sent me photos of dogwalkers with up to 12 dogs tied together. But they said least amount of dog poop.

That is good about the doormen washing it off each night. Sounds sanitary. I'm a neat freak. The annoying type that has sanitizing gel attached to every bag or purse I own.

It has actually gotten better with the dog poop situation. When I first moved there in 2002 it was much much worse. @Jenn I am not sure you would have been able to handle it. 🤣🤣 There were NO trash dumpsters in the street. People would just pile up their garbage bags on each street every night and you would have the homeless going through it. Most times they were good about re-tying the bags but many times they were not and you had trash flying everywhere.

The smells sometimes were terrible. Now, they have a big trash and recycling container on just about every street. Real progress. The homeless still go through the bins but at least it's all contained.

I agree Recoleta is the most livable area for upscale living. Also, in Palermo Chico is very high end and beautiful but it's not as convenient as there aren't as many things around that area. In Recoleta I literally could go out my apartment and find anything I need within a 6 block radius. Anything. I liked how central it was to everything. I could easily get over to Palermo or San Telmo or Puerto Madero. Walk over to Retiro. Very safe too.

When I move back full time to Buenos Aires I would go back to Recoleta. Palermo is also nice but I still think Recoleta is the best overall neighborhood in Buenos Aires.

There are probably more dogs in Recoleta vs. Palermo. Many of the older and affluent population have dogs. It's just that many of these people pay dogwalkers to walk them and all of these people always pick up after their dogs.

I wish people would shame people that just let their dogs poop on the sidewalks get shamed. I'm the type if I see them doing it, I'll say something to them. Things won't improve unless people keep one another honest and push them to do the right thing.

Recoleta is head and shoulders better than Palermo to me. Also one thing I noticed is Palermo is really loud. Even on streets that don't have much traffic there are a lot of noises there. I am not sure if sound is echoing. I rented an Airbnb in Recoleta and it was totally quiet. The thing that bothers me the most in BA isn't the dog poop. It is the noise pollution.

Yep. Soho had it everywhere. It's funny because Soho seems nice during the day. But I was walking late at night as I was leaving a friend's apartment. Go late at night and it is kind of depressing. Many of those nice stores have a protective barrier and it is all spraypainted over. Why is there so much grafitti in Soho vs. other areas?? I don't see this in Recoleta or even Palermo Hollywood isn't that bad.

And dog crap is all over Soho. Like everywhere! I noticed the same as Craig. I wonder why this is?

Very true. I was one of the first people that saw the potential of Soho back in 2003. It was nothing like it is today. There were no businesses like today. I started buying up a lot of properties and real estate there. It is ok for a few nights but I don't actually like that area to live in. If you're just coming in town a week or so on vacation but it's too touristy and as others mentioned, there is dog poop everywhere. It's funny when I go to BA each year with my kids, my youngest daughter will always play a game and say "watch out a landmine". She literally is saying it a few times on each block there. LOL.

The vandalism is terrible in Soho. You nailed it @reggie about at night when the shutters are down you can see all those stores are totally vandalised. Those shields save them from all the paint. Many places are like that. Here is a photo of a house that I purchased back about 20 years ago for a client. I bought up a lot of properties like this. Most of them I have since sold but the owner still owns this one.

Look at the before and after photos. That is how much of Soho was before very clean. Now a lot of people just don't care and spray paint everywhere. It's terrible that they ruin beautiful buildings. The owner painted it several times but she finally gave up.
This photo below was a few weeks ago. She has since had to install a metal gate to the door because homeless people are sleeping on her front door.

It's funny because before Palermo Hollywood was more sketchy, especially at night. Once you passed the train tracks it used to be a bit scary at night but now Palermo Hollywood is so much nicer than most of Soho. Much cleaner, more beautiful, less vandalism. As to why? I just think once thugs see some vandalism they just add to it. Also, several of these places in Soho are businesses during the day but at night no one is there to watch over them. Palermo Hollywood has more residential buildings and more security so there is more of a constant presence of people watching. Same in Recoleta where it's mostly residential buildings and many have doormen or security or constant presence of people nearby. It's also cleaner so people are less hesitant to do it there.

I think there will be a huge growth phase around Soho and Hollywood. I like the area of Palermo Freud and also the area from Soho all the way over to Recoleta. It's more central and a lot of growth will happen there. It's very convenient. There aren't as many restaurants and shops around there but I think that is a good thing. I'd much rather just take a 5 minute Uber vs. staying right in the heart of Soho. Palermo Hollywood is fantastic too.

The heart of Soho around Plaza Serrano is especially bad. Once you get outside of that area it isn't too bad. But I think with all the bars in that area it contributes to the problems. There are a lot of drunk people around Plaza Serrano especially on the weekends. Lots of young kids and they are the ones probably doing the tagging of buildings.

I remember when Palermo Hollywood was not as nice. I didn't even feel comfortable walking along at night from Soho to Hollywood many years ago. My how it has improved. It is one of my favorite parts of the city now. There are many great restaurants in that area. My favorite area is near La Mar restaurant. They have beautiful buildings and the area feels great.

Palermo Hollywood is my favorite neighborhood. Easily. Lots of places to eat or drink. And it doesn't feel as touristy to me as Soho. I'm actually surprised all the places are full of locals dining out. You can tell how rich people are because these places are almost always full. I hear locals in all of them not tourists.

My favorite bar is Uptown next to La Mar. Great place.

I loved Palermo Hollywood too! We ate over at La Mar twice and to have drinks at happy hour. That area is so nice. I bought an apartment that they are building now and it's only about 6 blocks from La Mar. I look forward to walking over there. Great place at happy hour. Uptown was so cool. That is by far the coolest speakeasy I have ever seen.

Yep Uptown was cool. That subway car was insane. I am still trying to figure out how they did that!

What is Palermo Freud? What area is that? I vaguely recall hearing that. There are so many Palermo's. Where is that?
You can read about it on this thread below. It talks about it in detail

Betsy just posted a good link that describes the area. You should see tremendous growth over the next 5 years in this area. From Scalabrini Ortiz down to Gorriti to Gallo over to Santa Fe. It is a very central and easy-to-access nice residential area with public transport right there with several subway stops, high-end shopping mall, and very easy access to neighborhoods like Recoleta and just a few minutes from Soho without being in the middle of tourist central.

Craig you aren't alone. Saw this on X today. Most tourists stay over in Palermo and this is a fairly common complaint. Americans can't fathom that people would not clean up after their dogs on such a level.
