Poverty has no limit in Argentina

He has to chase investments because that is what is going to help turn things around for Argentina. There has already been billions of investments announced with the RIGI law. Unfortunately the benefits of that won't be felt for some time.

Frustration is normal if things don't turn around soon. And it is common in Argentina to blame the sitting President in office.
This constant blame game won't end. Just read this today. Sounds like a bit of BS on both sides. They are claiming 95% of the population would be at poverty levels if Milei didn't win.

It sounds like the worst in history was after the big crash in 2002. This says 65.6% back then. And now it's at 55%.

No one knows what the poverty levels would be if Massa won. It wasn't as high as it is now and getting worse. If this keeps up we will surpass the 2002 levels.

Agree about the exaggeration of 95% being poor. There is a lot of wealth in this country. No matter how bad the economy is there is a significant portion of the population that will do well no matter what.

It is true that there are many that are wealthy in Argentina and more so Buenos Aires but so too it is true that there are many that are poor and there is no doubt this number is growing every day. The amount that are homeless now are shocking.

The numbers are clear that things are getting worse.

Negative news about the poverty seems like it's starting to make it's way now. For a while there was just positive news about the turn around there but the poverty levels are really bad. Just saw on ABC them talking about it. Is that trend expected to get worse?

You're right! These figures come from INDEC, and I don't think anything has been altered, especially since Milei appointed economist Marco Lavagna, son of the well-known economist Roberto Lavagna, to lead the agency. His appointment was specifically intended to avoid the manipulation of figures that happened in previous administrations when data was adjusted for political convenience. The statistics are bleak, especially when it comes to children, and while no one is saying everything was perfect before, it’s undeniable that under Milei’s leadership, things are getting worse.

These official government numbers are always fudged. Same thing happens in the USA. You can always bet that true inflation is always higher. Many times the government strips out essential items that all citizens pay for as they don't want the numbers included.

Get ready because in October, there will be more increases in electricity, gas, water, tolls, and transportation costs. I can understand the frustration of people who are juggling their budgets just to make ends meet by cutting back on expenses that have now become luxuries. Of course, investments are important, but I still don't understand the hit on the middle class, the very class that trusted and voted for the president.

Unfortunately, the "heavy legacy" is to blame for the poverty in Argentina. No one is denying that there is a crisis, but it's important to take a look at the past...

I do support President Milei but there has to be a limit on just how much you are making lower and middle class pay for. I understand it's a tough situation but his support is starting to suffer.

Say what you want about the Kircnners. They were the only Presidents to reduce the amount of poverty. The record low was in 2017 with only 25% poverty with CFK.

The record high poverty is not the result of Milei. Do you realize that without these changes Argentina would be in hyperinflation now with massive massive amounts of poverty?

The poverty levels are starting to go down thanks to this administration.

Hyperinflation would make these poverty numbers look like nothing. Here is the graph that the above was taken from. I think the worst is behind us.

The truly shocking figure is that kids 14 years or younger are living in poverty at 66% levels.

In Argentina, about 36.4% of workers in dependent relationships are not registered with social security. This means that nearly 4 out of 10 employees in the country lack access to basic labor rights like retirement benefits, healthcare coverage, and protection against layoffs. In other words, they are working "in the black," meaning they don’t have the protections and benefits they would receive if they were properly registered. This is another important area that Milei should address.

It's a concerning situation because these workers are quite unprotected and cannot access benefits that could help them during difficult times.

It sounds like the poverty rates are actually coming down. It's difficult to know what is true or not because everyone has their own agenda and sides. I saw this online today. Said that a consulting firm predicts a drop of poverty rate from 57.4% with Massa to 49.7% for the April to September 2024 period.

It is really difficult to know what is true since all the news reports said poverty is getting worse.

Another study came out from Di Tella University in Argentina. They say poverty in Argentina dropped to 48.6% in the third quarter of 2024. Between April and September, poverty stood at 49.7%. In January, it was at 57.4%. So indeed this sounds like things are working.

Seems like a lot of great news lately in Argentina. It used to be cheap for us in Brazil but now it's expensive and all the Argentines are coming to Brazil!
