Newcomer Robbery in Palermo

YenyBerch

New member
I'd like to share my recent experience involving a robbery at a local convenience store owned by the popular "Chinos" in Argentina. While I was purchasing my monthly supplies, a group of young individuals entered the store. The cashier urgently instructed us to remain in place as they proceeded to rob the establishment. Once the culprits left, we all rushed to assist the cashier and promptly dialed 911. The police responded swiftly, arriving within 5 to 10 minutes of the call. The officers were both professional and friendly, attentively listening to our accounts and gathering descriptions of the perpetrators. At the conclusion of the incident, they heightened security measures in the vicinity to prevent future robberies.

In light of the discussions about security concerns in Argentina, I wanted to share this experience to reassure you that, in the event of an unfortunate incident, the Argentine police are prepared to respond promptly, offer support, and take preventive measures to ensure the safety of the community.

I'm glad everyone is ok. I've been going to Argentina for 22 years and lived there full time 9 years and I've never seen more police interactions than while my family and I were there in June and July. I saw 4 different police arresting people in the span of 24 hours. I never saw that before the entire time I have been going to Buenos Aires.

The good thing is the police seem to be very swift. One that I saw a group of people looked like they just took someone's cellphone and the police actually were all there and I saw a police officer driving on the wrong side of the road to get there. There were a swarm of cops. This was at Las Heras and Junin right by the Recoleta Village Mall area. They had arrested a group of 3 or 4 people.

and this is why civilians should be able to concealed-carry a defensive weapon. i was a cop for a couple years...what if one of those robbers decided he wanted to kill you that day because he thought you were [insert ethnicity/religion here that he doesn't like]? when seconds matter, police will always be minutes away. glad you guys were okay, but self-defense truly is the primary right in a free society

I was a gun rights advocate in the USA but I am darn glad that they don't allow so many to carry guns here. It's very rare and I'm glad for it. Thank you for your service @StatusNomadicus as a police officer but I'd disagree that having more guns here in a good idea.

sure, it's the age-old argument of gun-free zones. and the mass-shootings that happen primarily in gun-free zones have debunked the idea. it's just something that is true, whether we want it to be true or not; criminals already break the law and carry guns, so gun-free zones and not allowing responsible law-abiding citizens to protect themselves is just an ostrich putting its head in the sand. the bad guys love it when they know their victims are unarmed. know how many robberies/violent crimes happen in gun stores and police substations? there's a certain level of crime found in places like Wyoming and Nebraska, versus NY and CA; criminals just aren't going to attack as much, because you really never know who is carrying.

there was just a video 2 weeks ago of an off-duty police officer in BsAs province getting his phone robbed at gunpoint. only reason he could defend himself was because he had a concealed pistol, though it was a big risk. but in the end, bad guys with guns only get stopped by good guys with guns, which is why you would call the police if Peronist rioters were breaking-down your door and saying they were going to stab you to death (you'd want the police to shoot the stabber).

Argentina is a special country regarding the carrying of weapons. They see it as political or cultural rather than for legitimate defense use. I have lived in this country for a long time and I know several retired military personnel and some of them have been deprived of the right to bear arms. I hope that in the future the whole problem will be solved and the parties will come to an agreement in order to reach a common good with this issue.

Doug Casey says "In Argentina, you can own all the guns you want." https://internationalman.com/articl...te-of-the-union-the-second-amendment-part-ii/

i hope Milei deletes the silly laws allowing gangsters to conceal-carry

if the politicians' security guys have 'em, you should be able to have the same guns and carrying abilities

You don't understand this country. Almost all your posts are wrong about Argentina. The last thing my country needs is more guns like YOUR country. Argentina is mostly safe even with very bad economy because we don't have many guns here. Please go back to your country soon with your bad idea.

I don't understand these people. They can't just have guns in their country but now they want to bring guns to our peaceful country. This guy a joke.

your 3 uninformed opinions don't change the fact that an unarmed populace doesn't make it "safe," even if you feel a certain way. but no statistics or thought-experiments would change your mind, most likely at this point, so debating won't do anything. if guns are so scary, we should vote for the cops and military to not have guns anymore...that would make the country more 'safe,' right?

gun crimes in Wyoming versus gun crimes in cities with super-strict gun laws like Chicago IL, Washington DC, and New York City NY...look it up! bet you won't

I disagree with you. You are probably the only person that I heard of that thinks more guns in Argentina is a good idea or a good thing. Buenos Aires for a large metro area is very safe. Even with all this economic mess. Having not that many guns around is a large part of that. What crime there is here isn't violent here.

If the USA had the same economic mess that Argentina had, everyone would be shooting one another. Too many guns there. It's ok to disagree on guns but @StatusNomadicus you are going to be in the minority convincing people that more guns in Argentina is a good idea.

more guns in Argentina is a good idea.
not Argentina; it's a universal principle...an unarmed populace will cause suffering over time, starting with minorities. who did Hitler disarm before the Holocaust? would the King have preferred the American Colonists in the 1700s have had more guns or less? did the 1970s genocide in Indonesia happen because the socialist victims were able to defend themselves against mobs?

i don't mind having a minority opinion; i exercise and eat clean, and i don't get experimental genetic vaccines, so i'm already different than over half of Westerners. but guess what: being obese is bad for you. exercise is necessary. yet people will tell you that Big Is Beautiful and that getting an mRNA 'vaccine' is okay because the CDC/Fauci said so. gun rights are the same; every person has an inherent right to self-defense, whether you find it scary or not. i've carried a pistol my entire adult life and it has never killed anyone. you'll find most ex-military and cops recommend people be self-sufficient...why do you think that is?

people already have guns all over Argentina, for hunting and surviving in the countryside. and the criminals certainly aren't going to stop using them. it's a hard pill to swallow with modern brainwashing, but the only equalizer for vulnerable populations is a trained, responsible gun owner spread through society.

When will you admit you are wrong? Probably never. People like you never admit you are wrong. You say Milei is so great for country and you will see massive suffering but I wonder when you will admit you were wrong? Funny no one else on this thread agree with you more guns are a good idea for Argentina. NO ONE.

since avocado started a new thread, i was going to post this video from @BowTiedMara here, but i ended up using it on the Gun-Control one. but since it's relevant:

when will this dead Russian dude admit he was wrong for wanting to be able to defend himself, right?? /s
It is like @StatusNomadicus is obsessed for not having his guns in Argentina. This is the 50 post about his not having his guns. More guns = more problems for Argentina. Amazing how so many Americans love guns so much. We lucky most expats agree guns bad for Argentina.

you're so obsessed with me, Dumb-o-cado! like i said, "since avocado started a new thread" (because of obsession with me), the video is relevant to the gun debate. interesting how commies find ways to silence you, rather than addressing the truth of your claims. and they continually ignore the premise of an argument, instead trying to cancel-culture de-platform. i've posted in 2 threads about guns, so 2 is a little off from the claimed 50. also, i have hundreds of posts, and original content, so guns are 1% of my discussion here. again, Mute the commies; they really make you dumber, and they aren't here to learn/improve/debate. just 100% negativity and political shilling.

for the rest of the people here who aren't idiot ideologues, there is some interesting information about Argentina:

1. there are equal or more illegal guns in the country than legal ones. "In 2021, 1.62 million weapons were registered to just over 1 million owners in Argentina, though it is estimated that there are another 1.6 million illegal weapons in the country." https://www.as-coa.org/articles/explainer-gun-laws-latin-americas-largest-economies (and other sites say there are more illegal ones, after Ukraine sold weapons on the black market)

2. a huge percentage of argentinos, like in every area of the world, want guns and know they are just tools like knives and cars. here is a local opinion that the Commies don't want you to hear: "Restricting the guns to civilians doesn’t helps to security, because criminals won’t register their guns, they are illegal and they will have them regardless what the law says. Actually current laws already says they can’t have guns, yet they have more guns that the good people." https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-gun-laws-in-Argentina-like

3. 10% of the population have guns and don't commit any crimes (of course like anywhere else, the commies reside in the big-city and want to impose their will on the rural populace). Close to 10% of the civilian population in Argentina own at least one gun. Being the second largest country in South America with 2,000 miles of land and numerous huntable species, Argentina is the most popular hunting destination in the world. Argentina is most famous for the high volume dove shooting." https://saadventuresafaris.com/cost-of-guns-and-ammunition-in-argentina/

4. Apr2022 there was a 50% increase in gun sales, because things were getting so desperate and dangerous. i wonder how Dumb-o-cado can blame this on Milei somehow? https://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0422/p06s02-woam.html

5. Propaganda is working. "Public opinion on guns and firearms in Argentina is generally divided, with some people advocating for stricter gun control measures and others defending the right to bear arms for self-defense. In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases involving firearms that have sparked public debate on the issue. The government has also launched campaigns to encourage voluntary disarmament and reduce the number of illegal firearms in circulation." https://legalitylens.com/are-guns-legal-in-argentina/

6. good analysis of guns in Argentina, though i can't see the full text because i haven't paid for this subscription yet. https://www.nomadanewsletter.io/p/gun-laws-in-argentina

You are one obsessed with me. I am happy I live rent-free in your mind. o_O:eek:🤣

This crazy guy want more guns in Argentina like the USA. There are almost 400 million guns in the USA! About 46% of the worldwide total of civilian firearms only in USA! I read 121 guns for every 100 American residents! Now this crazy guy want the same for Argentina. Crazy.

more guns in Argentina like the USA
nah, i'm happy to buy one of the existing legal ones (people in your extended family likely have firearms, unless your entire clan is 100% city-slickers). not sure how me responding to your pokes is me thinking about you all the time; you're just one of the 3 main clowns here who post stupid sh*t. again: why are you on an Expat forum? it's really weird.

i just want to be able to protect myself if someone starts shooting-up a school. i've carried a pistol for self-defense for my entire adult life 20s and 30s and i've never had an issue. responsible gun owners in the USA are some of the most respectful, kind, peaceful country folk in the world. don't let the commies try to convince you that pieces of metal and plastic are somehow evil.

No my family not like guns. I have many family all over Argentina and no one own guns. I think we can disagree the things but no need to use bad language. This forum not just for expats. I read it for everyone and all locals too. I read a post they might change name in future. I respect that you want gun in your own country but I still argue that guns not needed in Argentina.

We can agree to disagree on the things.
