Politics Thread: President Javier Milei - From Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) to Today

There have been protests in BA ever since I first came here over a decade ago. I doubt that will stop so not sure shooting demonstrators is a good plan of action. Beating up people isn't the solution.
Totally against Amnesty International's policies.

Villaruel seems like she has big ambitions to take over for Milei. Sounds like even she is against Millei. Not sure how LLA can do well when they are all fracturing away. VP and Milei hate one another. So much for a united Front.

But is the VP unloyal? Or is she just distancing herself from MIlei? Seems like they have been drifting apart for some time now. She was very loyal to him before. It seems strange in an election year when they need to be united that they would not be on the same page. Why is that?

I don't think Milei cares about Amnesty Intl. or anyone else. All he cares about is breaking law for him and his sister. Stealing money. Illegally putting Surpreme Court judging up without going through legally. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt.

The VP is very wise to distance herself from Milei and his sister. This has been happening all last year. She knows he still has some support now but she knows this will turn around and when it does she will be there. Milei's sister Karina hates VP and created the problems. Her brother do anything she say.

Villaruel will take over when Milei is forced from office.

Lots of those younger people were probably paid but still not smart to just shoot rubber bullets into the crowd. Bullrich seems like she is going beyond what is allowed with the anti-protest laws. This is not looking like things will go in the right direction. Protests will pick up the sooner we get to October.

There is no excuse for them to handle the senior citizens and soccer fans like they did. Even if they might have been paid they can't treat people like that. Basic human rights to protest can't be ignored.

There is a difference with peacefully protesting and burning and looting and destroying things. This same thing happened to Macri in 2017 so they are trying to do the same thing. We will see if this time before the elections they will manage to do the same thing. These thugs are not protestors that have anything to do with pensions. They are paid mafia paid thugs.

I read that a judge released all of these people. That is crazy. How is anything supposed to get solved in Argentina if people can loot and burn things and then get let go for their "fundamental right to protest"?

Uncle Wong that is why nothing ever gets fixed in Argentina long term. It is destined for failure. Every aspect of the government is rotten or corrupt. Especially the judicial system. Look at what Milei himself is trying to do with putting rotten Supreme Court justices without approval from the house or senate. It will just continue on like this. I don't think it will ever change.

That is correct! Read about these trouble makers.

They often provide services to political and union leaders who hire them as agitator groups (during rallies and mass meetings, that in Argentina traditionally have people chanting like football crowds, playing drums and even shooting firecrackers), goon squads (clashing with supporters of other political parties, unions or police during demonstrations, protests, rallies and strikes), bodyguards, etc.

But I don't understand something. The pensions are much higher now than when Alberto Fernández was President and were they complaining like this? From what I can see the pensions in dollars has gone way up since then. Is this a thing they would complain no matter what?

Well so far the polls are still looking good for LLA. This was from a last week. I'm not sure how accurate the polls are but it's still looking good for LLA.

Trust me these polls fake. Look at splintering of the party already. Even VP hates Milei. October a long time from now. You will see popularity keep going down.

Add up all of the other party and they are far more than LLA. Milei is shifting people away from him not making them happier. Many scandals coming out. The undecided will shift to other side.

It true that the pensions were less than. Maybe $100 and people were complaining then too. The difference is that back then a pensioner could live better on much less. Now the price of everything is too high. Electricity go up 400%, water, gas, medicines, condo expensas, food and everything else. To take transport keeps going up. People live much worse on more money because prices so high now.

I don't believe you that things are worse off now. Under Alberto he lowered their pensions to about $80/$100 and pensioners were really really struggling. You didn't see what you are seeing now. Much of this is probably just paid protesters in an election year. I am not saying pensioners don't have it bad but they've always had it bad. This isn't something new under Milei.

Pensioners in Argentina always have difficult situation. The amount did go up. The $380 dollar minimum pension in Argentina is probably similar to other countries in EU. Problem now as Avocado mentioned is that purchasing power has gone down as everything is so expensive. Medicines especially have jumped up. A coffee in EU is 1 Euro. Here in BA it can be $4.50 dollars.

It is not just COL that is going up. The violence against the people. Peaceful protesters. Look what they did to that poor reporter. He is in a coma now. The Guardian did a story.

Great article in Barrons. It's going to take a whole lot more than reducing inflation.

Argentina’s Markets Want a Miracle. Slashing Inflation Wasn’t Enough.

I saw this article about the miracle being on hold. Does anyone have the original WSJ article this is referencing? I can't find it.

LLA is so done. Look at all the fighting in their own party. I love it! Change is coming.

The party is a mess. It is illegal all the things Milei do to the people. Now I am glad some newspapers write about it. In the future when he is out of office they will write books on all the laws he broke and why he was a failure.
