Medical Insurance Premiums in Argentina still go up Each Month Over Inflation

Private medical insurance costs continue to spiral out of control in Argentina. The government said they were going to talk to providers to cap the costs but they continue to go up each month. Here you can see an actual medical premium bill. It's for one of our employees. We pay their medical coverage each month. This employee is on an OSDE 310 plan and has one child.

In December 2023 it was $177,931 pesos. In December 2024 it was 507,888 pesos. 185+% Year-over-year increase and the cost continues to go up each month.

It is almost criminal for the government not to intervene in the market. They said they would stop allowing these companies to keep raising but they are not helping. They should put this in the official inflation numbers and I promise you the government would stop allowing it to go up so much.

Medicus finally looks like they are going to stop increases. Let's see. They said that before and never did.

These companies all deserve to go out of business. That article said Medicus has lost 25,000 members in the past year! They only had 200,000 members total so that is a lot of clients to lose. The government said they had to freeze the prices to last years prices but that never happened.

I just saw this article too. To lose 25,000 customers in a year when you only have 200k members is shocking!

Yep, these Argentine companies are ignorant. No common sense at all.

To show you the stupidity of Argentine companies, they are losing customers and instead of freezing price increases for ALL customers. They only freeze it for new customers. This is the mentality of Argentine companies. The customers that have been loyal and paying premiums each month are going to continue to be subject to traditional monthly adjustments.

I posted about this today.

Argentine companies never operate with any common sense. I am always shocked at how they price things. No basis of reality!

In all fairness they seem to have learned this from US cable TV and cellphone providers.😉

Actually the space is very competitive in the USA. You can jump ship to another provider and they will give you a sweet deal. I switched over to TMobile recently after moving back to the US and they gave me several free lines for my kids phones. Much lower and better deal than I had at AT&T.

Can this be right? They are bleeding with tens of thousands of customers cancelling their plans and they don't promise to freeze prices for the old members. Just the new ones?? 🤡😂😂

I've been with T-Mobile for a long time and always sweet talked my way in to a good deal (I used to have a dozen lines for my ICs)>
But before I cut the cord, I would hop from cable to satellite and back every year to get a better deal

Very true. Tmobile is the best deal. I got a 2nd line free for my mom. They have those deals once a year to add a free line.

Yes! They will always deal if you threaten to cancel or switch. I was with Verizon and they got me to switch and even gave me a great deal to upgrade iPhone. I travel around and love Tmobile for the free roaming.

Just an FYI that the public hospitals in Buenos Aires today all started charging foreigners for any medical services they need. No more free medical treatments for foreigners. It's still cheap compared to the USA but who knows if they will start price gouging.
Ouch. There goes my plan not to get private medical insurance if I move to BA. I thought there was free universal healthcare at the public hospitals? I heard they were sketchy but I thought worst case scenario I could count on it if something happens.

Many provinces in Argentina have been getting rid of free healthcare for foreigners. It's still free for locals but I have a few friends that had to go to the public hospital and they had nightmare stories of waiting hours and hours in line. I probably wouldn't recommend it. Worth just going to a private hospital especially now that they will charge you anyway.

I would guess that prices would be reasonable but medical costs have skyrocketed. I would think even here if you get some serious disease and you have to pay out of pocket it could bankrupt you. I think you said you were thinking about moving here permanently or maybe I am confusing you with Futuro. I would be careful about not having any medical coverage. For simple things it would be affordable but any major illness and would be disastrous on your budget.

I don't think it's the government's business paying for healthcare for foreigners. Argentina is broke and should not be paying for this. Foreigners shouldn't expect to come to Argentina and get free healthcare.

I can't understand someone that would move to a foreign country and not have health insurance. I don't care where you are, if you have to pay for expensive medical procedures if you get cancer or something it is going to cost a lot. It can't be more than a few hundred bucks a month in Argentina.

This is the second time I am getting confused with @Uncle Wong reminds me of the show: The Wire with this

But I won't be getting medical coverage, at least initially. Risk factors vary depending on so many things such as family history, lifestyle choices, diet etc. It doesn't mean I wouldn't do some of the recommended screenings, just paying out of pocket for those.

Yes if you're single and don't have a wife or kid it's different but even still, you have to factor in if you have to return to the USA for some reason and you have some medical illnesses or disease it could very well bankrupt you. In my vast experience traveling and living around the world in different countries it's best to think and plan for worst case scenarios NOT best case scenarios. The vast majority of people out there plan for best case scenario and then when worst case scenario happens it can be devastating.

I can tell you from personal experience that you can be perfectly healthy, have no family history of anything and suddenly come up with illnesses or rare illness. And even having great insurance, medical bills can be extremely high. Best to plan for worst case rather than best case. My 2 cents. While medical related stuff is relatively much cheaper than the USA, it still can add up in BA and prices keep going up on procedures.

Very true about not being sure if something major happens and having to move back home. My brother moved to Germany and he was very healthy and had a stroke. He ended up having to move back to the US because he had to be close to family. Everyone thinks they will stay healthy forever or nothing will come up. Isn't health insurance like $250 a month in BA? That is what some people that I met in BA said they were paying. Seems like a good idea to have it in case. Especially if you have to pay out of pocket in case of some emergency. I would guess that they will stick it to you as a foreigner. Nothing in Argentina particularly strikes me as non hustle. I have the feeling now that foreigner have to pay it will be $X for a local and $XXX for a foreigner.

I guess it would depend on how much they will charge you? Probably a good idea to at least price out how much it would cost to get treated for cancer or some serious disease. I guess this is another good reason to get my dni asap.

How do you get a plan without dni? I talked to a few that said I had to have a dni. One said I had to have medical records from my last doctor. I have a pre-existing condition and it sounds like some won't allow that. I also tried to just pay to get bloodwork done and offered to pay out of pocket and was told there is a new law making it necessary to have a dni to do lab tests. This can't be true is it? I offered to pay 100% of it. They would not let me.

Glad I can make you laugh. 🤣

I probably will do the same thing but will see what prices are like. Seems like prices in healthcare will keep going up. I am healthy now but doesn't mean I always will be but it seems like decent policies for expats are about $200 to $400 per month depending on age with seniors even more than that.
