Patience is wearing down with President Milei

i can assure you that prices in Dollars for regular living are overwhelmingly unchanged since i've been here a year and a half...in fact, prices in Pesos for milk (at full price, which i never pay) have been 1270-1395 Pesos per liter for at least 6 months...whereas when i got to Argentina in Nov2023, prices went up weekly if not daily by a few Pesos.
🤡🤡🤡
😂😂😂

Are you dumb? Are you really living in Argentina? What an idiot you are. Now I don't believe you are really living here if you are really trying to argue that prices are the same in USD than in November 2023.

i always try to remember that BsAs is the NYC here, so obviously the people living in veeeeeeery center of a city center of a 13-million metro area are NOT representative of the rest of the country (compare to how Portland or Seattle or NYC etc. vote in the USA compared to Nebraska, Dakotas, etc.) - all the biggest peronists are obviously going to flock to CABA for these types of things, just like big protests in Washington DC...but the crowd in DC is overwhelmingly not representative of most USA folks

Argentina is NOT Buenos Aires but at the same time much of the entire country all live in Buenos Aires. 40% of the entire country live in BA Province so for many people it is the center and hub of Buenos Aires.

So it isn't the same thing as just comparing BA like NYC because in the USA there are many huge metropolitan areas that have a lot of of the population. You have cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, etc. with many people.

Besides the few grocery items you mention @StatusNomadicus like milk and some other things what else has stayed the same? I think you mentioned your electricity bill jumping up. Look at the cost of many things and they have skyrocketed up over the past year. I realize you don't have any HOA bills in your house but most of Buenos Aires has HOA bills as most live in apartments. Transportation, medical bills, medicine and other healthcare-related bills, food, restaurants, cafes have all gone up.
If you don't do many activities and just live a quiet life you can get by with not huge increases. Things like electricity had to have gone up everywhere in Argentina. I would think it is even more in Mendoza than BA. Every facet of my life in BA has gotten more expensive in dollar terms vs. last year. I don't blame this on Milei but many believe that things are not progressing enough. Change takes time. This turn around will take at least 4-5 years I would guess.

Exactly. Buenos Aires does not represent all of Argentina but it's really the epicenter for most things. I agree that if your life resolves around not doing much activities, not traveling much or don't have any children and have to worry about things like medical, tuition at schools and normal every day entertainment, sporting stuff, etc. then maybe your costs won't go up much but it's all relative. The vast majority of people in Buenos Aires are feeling the pain.

Again, I'm not trying to argue that this is President Milei's fault or not. He inherited a mess but many feel like the next stage of the plan will be difficult. Most of my friends still believe that Milei is the best chance they have but people are losing patience. I'm hearing the same thing with others. I had a chat this week on the phone with BowTiedMara from X and he said the same thing.

And he says the same thing as all my other friends with children, that the costs have skyrocketed up in USD terms. In living and working in Argentina so many years (23 years) I have a good pulse on things. Many things have greatly improved and I believe much progress has been made. But also I have always said that I probably won't see systemic change in Argentina in my lifetime. I am very realistic and understand Argentina better than most.

where, twitter?
I am convince you do not even live in Argentina! You have no idea what go on in this country. You try to argue prices the same as last year. You are blind to police brutality. Maybe you do the same thing when you police officer. Who knows.

There are many videos online of the police brutality to people. Open you eyes!

Look at people just standing around being assaulted!

So many more examples of this brutality!

Prices are ridiculous! The only positive thing is after Milei people will know that his miracle was a great lie. And Peronism will be around for 100 more years in Argentina.

I am convinced this guy is not real. Or maybe he is sitting somewhere in Omaha making fake Argentina posts. Trying to argue prices aren't going up the past year.

Milei has wiped out 15,000 small and medium enterprise jobs, 300,000 formal jobs were lost, he is starving retirees, cut budgets for universities and public hospitals, all to manage an increase in reserves of just USD 6,000,000,000 despite record harvests from agriculture sector.

Where do you live in Argentina? It must not be CABA. Prices in 1.5 years in all of Argentina have jumped up while the dollar has been stable. The dollar is going up now but prices jumped up.

Reserves fell by USD 6 billion in just 3 months! Of which USD 931,000,000 vanished from Friday to today in an attempt to control the pesos price No one can blame Milei for what other presidents did before him but he said IMF debt was terrible and now he wants to put the country in more debt.

because the country is in turmoil and living there temporarily would be 'better' for you and i, whereas locals may not feel that way.
What are you talking about?? There are towns of Argentines here in Spain. They left Argentina because it was so screwed up. Here in Malaga there are so many people from Argentina and a lot from Buenos Aires. People are literally telling you that they left Argentina because of the conditions and you are trying to tell them they made a mistake?

My friends in BA left and so have most of their digital nomad friends for cheaper places. Some went to Mexico. Others here in Spain and some to Thailand and a few to Malaysia.

Then you had some huge bad missteps at the wrong time. Like the Libra scandal which even if polls say it didn't hurt him, it did. Because you have people on the fence already and see things like that and just shift their opinion and say he is just like the other past corrupt politicians. His handling of the situation was terrible too. He should have immediately fired his sister and that would have gone a long way.

A couple of Lee Kuan Yew quotes come to mind:

“Some people believe that, having debauched themselves in one political party or front, they can, like the phoenix, arise from the ashes of the old in the feathers of a new party, front or movement as fresh as if nothing had happened. In fact, there is no such magic formula for longevity in political life other than the simple and the obvious: just honour your promises; do not corrupt and debauch your party.”

“Start with putting three of your friends to jail. You definitely know what for, and people will believe you”

That is a great quote Craig! Never heard that before. I guess the tough thing in Argentina would be picking your 3 friends to send to jail. Milei would probably have to start with his sister. 🤣🤣

Love it! Never heard of any quotes from Lee Juan Yew but going to go look up some of his other quotes. These are wonderful. I have many friends that tell me if Milei would have simply fired his sister after the scandal it would have set him apart and gained a lot of credibility. But it doesn't sound like that will ever happen. Sounds like he would sooner resign then try to move forward without his big sister.

I'm starting to sense the shifting of the tides as well. I think the debacle in front of the Congreso last week was a tipping point for more than a few, as well. When folks as far out as Colegiales and Belgrano are beating their pans in solidarity with the protestors in front of the Congress, you should probably back off and reevaluate your strategy
Same. The problem is that for a while Milei was in the limelight of a guy that could do no wrong. Than things have drastically turned. It started just before the Libra scandal but they are making too many easy mistakes now before the mid-term elections. They have to know that anything they do wrong is going to have scrutiny.

Some of those videos are sad to see where the police are bothering protesters that are not violent. Protesting here has always been a thing ever since I have come here I agree that no one should be blocking streets but never a reason to pepper spray old people or tackle people on the sidewalk. There are cameras everywhere now. These are rookie mistakes.

I also have people that are falling off the edge of patience seeing these mistakes add up. Seems like devaluation is definitely going to happen. The central bank is burning through reserves the past week. If that goes on for much longer it won't look good for LLA. Seems like amateur hour now. Even with these other memecoin embarrassments even if the other people were hacked it's a reminder of how silly Milei was in the first place with his initial post. I hope they can turn things around.

If devaluation comes inflation is going to go back up and that was the only thing keeping people patient. Once that goes away it's probably over

Many people do not want to see a return to before. Some will keep supporting Milei because there is no other option but to hope this time is different. But lately as others mentioned, the hope is getting smaller and smaller that this time is different. The blue dollar is jumping back up and prices are jumping back up. Beef prices were already going up and now chicken prices jumped up last week. People are expecting a return to high inflation. 🙁

I posted a few weeks ago how people were losing patience with President Milei and more and more surveys and polls are confirming what I have been informally hearing from friends and business colleagues. This polling company is to the left but it's still important to take in input of all polls because they can work to shift public opinion. Both sides do it.

Majority of Argentines now disapprove of President Milei

We have posted the past few weeks now the tide is turning and people have been losing patience with President Milei. More and more polls are showing that a majority of Argentines hold a negative image of President Milei.

Among the top issues cited were the government’s ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), its management of a natural disaster in Bahía Blanca, and the general safety of the country.

According to the polling firm Zuban-Córdoba, 58.5% of the population hold a negative image of Milei, while 58.4% disapprove of his government’s performance — six percentage points higher than in November. A report released on Sunday found that these numbers began dipping in January, and that they are the lowest the administration has registered since October of last year.

“Negative numbers are increasing slowly but surely, and seem not to have a limit,” read the Zuban-Córdoba report, which noted that this trendline has grown more pronounced as “more problems” have arisen for the government. It also observed that Milei’s numbers first began to dip after he delivered a speech at the Davos Economic Forum that was widely denounced for being homo- and transphobic.

The firm likewise observed that Milei’s inner circle has long maintained that “as long as the government’s approval didn’t drop below 40% it wouldn’t have governability problems.” That number has dipped to 41.6%

Another poll by the University of San Andrés (Udesa, by its Spanish acronym) released last week found that Milei’s popularity has dropped around 7 points to 43%, while 51% hold a negative image of the president. Additionally, 62% are dissatisfied with the executive branch’s performance, with just 31% saying they are satisfied — 9 percentage points lower than in November. A similar slide can be observed in satisfaction levels with Milei’s government, whose approval rating now sits at 45% compared to 52% who disapprove.

Previously, Opina Argentina found on March 11 that Milei’s popularity has dropped 6 points in March, from 54 to 48%. These numbers represent “his lowest level since September 2024,” although Milei remains above water with men (54%). Udesa similarly found that 53% of men approve of the government, compared to just 48% of women.

Majority of Argentines HATE the IMF

Zuban-Córdoba’s poll indicated that 63% of Argentines hold a negative view of the IMF and 63.8% disagree with Milei’s decision to pursue a new loan from the U.S.-backed lender. Moreover, 68.9% agreed with the phrase “IMF loans have always been very damaging for Argentina.”

Zuban-Córdoba’s report separately revealed that 58.6% believe Milei “is not doing anything” to stop security issues, and 72.3% agree that the national state “should do more to prevent natural disasters throughout the country.” Additionally, 67% disagree that only the local governments of Bahía Blanca and Buenos Aires province should rebuild the city alone, without the national government’s help.

The report finally noted that 55.8% disagree with the phrase “Milei has inflation completely controlled,” while 57.6% say the president can’t be trusted due to his involvement in the Libra crypto scam. According to Udesa’s survey, 54% of participants said the scandal changed their opinion of the president.

I am not sure I would Zuban-Córdoba as they are known to be left leaning but I am seeing more and more polls that show his image has gone down the past few weeks. It is hard to tell how much of this true or not because in an election year anything goes.

But like some mentioned, some are losing faith. If inflation spikes again probably not going to be a good outcome for LLA.

Finally now you are seeing what I tell you all along.

With this jump in the blue dollar, it’s almost certain that prices will rise, which will drive inflation up as well. All of this is causing people to lose confidence in Milei’s management, and in fact, many are already losing faith in him.

That is sad if inflation goes up. I guess I want the blue to go up but not too much that it causes problems for you locals.

I posted about how I am hearing frustration and people losing patience. That is being reflected in new polls coming out now.

Public confidence in Javier Milei's Government is going down

What separates good from great is being about to flood out the noise and fanboys and just look at data and trends. We have posted about trends we are hearing amongst private polling we are doing the past few weeks, and it matches the new polling that is coming out daily now. Pointing things like this out are a positive not a negative. And people that choose to ignore facts will get left behind.

The Argentina Government Confidence Index (Índice de Confianza en el Gobierno (ICG) for March 2025, was compiled by the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella.

This index measures public confidence in the government of Javier Milei.

Decrease in Confidence: The ICG experienced a decrease of 5.4% in March compared to the previous month.

Index Value: The March ICG was 2.42 points.

Year-on-Year Change: The index showed a negative year-on-year variation of -5.5%.

Historical Comparison: The current level of confidence is 4.5% higher than in March 2017, during the second year of Mauricio Macri's presidency, and 35.7% higher than in March 2021, during Alberto Fernández's administration.

This indicates a mixed picture for public confidence in the government, with both short-term declines and longer-term improvements compared to previous administrations.
