Politics What does Trump's victory mean for Argentina?

That is exactly correct Craig. I've been doing business in Argentina for 23 years now. I've pretty much seen it all. I am not naive to think that Milei or his sister wouldn't be involved in anything corrupt. I think it's safe to say ALL politicians in Argentina probably are. I was disappointed that he would be so stupid to be blatant about it.

Now any outsider that knows anything about what he did will know he is just another member of the caste. Granted much better than the past corrupt leaders we have had but crushed a lot of people's hopes that he would be more intelligent. He has still done a lot of good things and will continue to. Just a needless self-inflicted distraction he didn't need in an election year.
Couldn't agree more Mike. I'm surprised Milei could be that small-minded. If he had kept his nose clean, a long list of highly paid board memberships and speaking engagements was waiting for him after government. His life would consist of giving speeches, rubbing elbows with interesting people all over the world, luxury travel, and getting paid handsomely for it. Whatever he made on that silly coin pales in comparison to all this. Not to mention the loss of status and everything else.

Also not too impressed with Milei's crisis management. His messaging is poor and he doesn't seem to grasp that, family or not, heads need to roll.

I was just talking to a friend about this. He had it SO easy. When you consider that he is rubbing elbows with Elon Musk and Donald Trump with his track record so far. His sister clearly is to blame. But I was just telling a friend he should have just fired his sister. I know the guy is loyal but he would have come out looking so good if he did that.

@CraigM you nailed it. The crisis management was terrible. If someone was fired I think that would have fired up even the detractors. That would have been the smartest decision to have fired his sister. He could have just said he trusted her. If you look at the timing of the coin launching and him posting 3 minutes later it is clear they were in on it. Maybe in Argentina his reputation isn't soiled but internationally it is.

There was talk of him getting the Nobel prize but I'm not sure how all of this factors into it. He would have made tens of millions just giving speeches after this. It is hard to tell what will happen but a lot of people I know lost all respect for this. They were waiting for him to fire his sister which would have been the smart decision.

When this broke out I just thought he would have to fire his sister. With his loyalty of her he refused to make any changes in his cabinet. Terrible dealing with this. I wonder how all these class action lawyers will do against him.

It sure is odd, Betsy. This is much bigger than family or any other deep belief system. Every day he doesn't do the obvious, it gets harder and more costly.

Agreed. He would have come out looking even cleaner if he fired his sister. The international community would have loved him! His popularity around the world would be even higher than it was because it would show he doesn't tolerate any corruption even if it's family. She probably even could have made her way back into some position but agree it is going to get more difficult. I don't think it's too late for him to do that and wish he would. I honestly believe that is also what truly happened. His sister just said to post it so he did.

This is a very good example of what happens in Argentina every day. People think about some quick cash today vs. long term pay off. My wife's family has a company here and they work with venders that they have issues with all the time.

The problem is that Milei's sister probably was thinking he will make money once out of office but why not make a few million now too. If you look at the people involved with President Trump's wife's coin the Melania coin, it's the same people so this might also explain why Trump is so quick to embrace Milei.

I still like the game plan of Milei and cutting big government but many of my friends that told me Milei was as corrupt as all the other politicians I have to reluctantly have to agree now. The risk to his reputation is done. Just because locals support him doesn't mean much. After all, Cristian stole millions from her own citizens and she had half the country embrace her.

Watch this YT video and it's clear that the same criminals that launched the Melania coin and Libra are the same people. Everyone knows that it was Milei's sister that got paid millions. If you talk to people deep in the crypto scene, and they all say that Kristina was charging for access to her brother. The same thing from others also saying she wanted to charge for access.

Milei not firing his sister is going to end up being the dumbest thing he did not do. Now it's almost too late. It's what I don't like about Argentine politics. Once they get away with it and the people accept the corruption they keep doing it. Milei could have changed things but he is just more of the same since he didn't fire his sister.

I just think now he backed himself into a corner. Maybe not to be paid now but eventually it will come home to deal with.

I think it is ok to get aligned with the USA but doubt that Trump cares too much about Argentina. Trump cares about Trump and also the US. Seriously doubt he really cares what happens to Milei or even Argentina. I have a feeling Trump is going to cause a surge in inflation with all of these tariffs.

This was a good article on what Argentina might have to gain.

Looks like Trump is going to turn American into Argentina! 🤣 In today's Wall Street Journal.

Trump Is Borrowing Argentina’s Chain Saw. America Will Suffer.

His fiscally laudable reforms have hurt. In February 2024, Mr. Milei more than doubled the price of bus and train ticket prices, while a utility price reform in June was estimated to hit middle-class families with a 155 percent rise in power bills. Unemployment rose from 5.7 percent to 6.9 percent between the third quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2024, and the percentage of the Argentine population living in poverty jumped 11 percentage points, peaking at over 50 percent in the first half of 2024.

For America, acting Argentine is not a good look. Argentina is a failing country that is just now turning the corner after carrying out painful reforms. If Mr. Trump were a true reformer, he would have presented specific budget goals, put seasoned technocrats in leading positions and focused on providing value-added technical innovation. Instead, he’s taking us on the Peronist path where power politics matters more than good policy. As Argentina teaches us, 100 years of misery could follow if the rule of law is replaced by the rule of one.

That is the NY Times. Very different source from the WSJ.

Just posted the same thing. VERY different and no Larry they are not the same thing. One is reputable and one is trash. However there was an article opinion piece in the WSJ that was not flattering of Milei and the mistakes he is making.

Milei and Trump really are at opposite ends of liberating markets, tariffs, protectionism. It is funny.

I am sorry. I got it confused with this article in WSJ.

I don't understand how any Milei supporter can keep making excuses for him. How can anyone defend what he is doing with the Supreme Court situation? More and more Milei want to break the law. That should make people nervous. Judge Lijo is one of the most corrupt judges in Argentina! It is commonly known.

This is hilarious. Something tells me if this keeps up Trump is going to be printing a LOT of money like Argentina used to. Inflation should go through the roof in the USA.

I think it is ok to get aligned with the USA but doubt that Trump cares too much about Argentina. Trump cares about Trump and also the US.
I can't understand people that think that Trump really cares about Argentina. Kind of laughable that Trump would do a free trade deal with Argentina and even if he did agree look how he treats people like Canada and Mexico!

Well Trump should follow Milei's lead on this. Look at Argentina. Tariffs and protectionism simply do NOT work.

One thing about Milei and Trump have in common both are liars. So many in Milei's party are liars. My friend in this article had many problems.
